In 1829 the British rulers of India banned Sati, the

Hindu practice of burning widows on their husband's

funeral pyre. Although the practice is opposed by most

Indians it remains a controversial issue even for

feminists, with some defending it as a sacred ritual.

Speaking of widows in Hindu culture, Deepa Mehta's recently released film, "Water," is

powerful and, in my opinion, very much worth seeing:
