TODAY(May 22) IS THE HINDU FESTIVAL OF HANUMAN JAYANTHI!

ANJANEYA

Once upon a time Shiva and Parvati were on Mount Kailasa in the High Himalayas enjoying the night air, the stars, and the intense cold. Parvati decided that it was a propitious time to ask a question. “Lord,” she whispered, “on whom do you meditate?” Lord Shiva smiled and said, “O Goddess, my mind is always turned to Vishnu, and even now I am thinking that He is going to be born into the world as Rama. I have decided to be born along with Him to help Him out.” And that is why Anjaneya was born, and why He was the servant of Rama.

Anjaneya is called Hanuman. Some say this is because Indra, the king of gods, once broke Anjaneya’s jaw (hanu) with a thunderbolt, but there is a hidden meaning there. Hanuman should be read as Anuman because he is the atomic force (anu means atom), the force which moves all matter in the universe. That is why He is called Pavana Putra or Vayu Suta (Son of Wind, wind being personified as the motile force). And we all know the power of nuclear energy! That is the power of Anjaneya.

You can also read His name as Hanaman. Hana means to kill, and as Maharudra, the manifestation of the God of Death, Anjaneya is a killer. He is called the Ekadash Rudra (the Eleventh Rudra) because He has perfect knowledge of both the dual and nondual aspects of Reality. Eleven is 11, 1 + 1 = 2, duality. Once Anjaneya said to Rama, “If I look at you from the point of view of Jnana (absolute knowledge), there is absolutely no difference between me and you. But when I see you through the dual viewpoint, from the standpoint of a devotee, then I am your servant.”

Anjaneya is extremely clever. On one occasion He was throwing stones into the water, and they would float; but when Rama tried to do it the stones would sink. When Rama asked why that was, Anjaneya replied, “Master. I throw stones in your name and they float, but you are God incarnate, and if you throw something down how can that thing ever stop until it reaches the bottom?” And Rama was amazed at his answer.

No one can match Anjaneya in Vira Bhava or in Dasya Bhava. He is the perfect hero and the perfect servant. That is why His devotees call Him Mahavir, the Great Hero. He could easily have taken Sita Himself and returned her to Rama without any war; after all, He burned down the entire city of Lanka.. But no, the play had to go on.

It is always better for you to worship Anjaneya in His aspect as the perfect servant, because your qualities of service will develop and automatically your ego will be kept under control. If you try to worship Him in His heroic aspect you will have to endure great difficulties. It’s worth it, though. I can’t describe to you the feeling I experienced when I first saw Anjaneya. I was in a Smashan late at night, and as my ritual reached its climax a tremendous electrical storm began. The lightning came closer and closer, striking the ground near me, and it seemed as if the thunderbolts were going to fall right on top of my head. The noise of the thunderclaps – Meghanada – was almost unbearable. Even the best of ascetics would run away; who would not try to avoid being struck by lightning? But, no! You have to sit. Thanks to His grace I was able to endure it, and I was able to see Him face to face. In fact, as the thunder worsened my mood became more exalted: “Ah! Now He is

finally going to come to me!”

Anjaneya is high, no doubt, but there is no manifestation of Shiva higher than Mahakala. He is the Adirudra, the First of all the Rudras, the Ultimate.

Sentinel to the Soul

Your mind is the guard for your spirit. Your Atma Ram can be reached and experienced if only your mind is allowing you. If your mind is not allowing you, if your mind is disturbed, if your mind is full of chattering and just constantly agitated, where is the experience of Atma? When your mind is going to give a little bit of space yes now ready – go inside, that very moment the window of consciousness opens and you will have a peep, have a glimpse of that reality, the truth, the substratum, that pure self, consciousness. They call it Atman, soul, spirit or god. That is possible if your mind is co-operating. If you already have conflict in your mind, where is the possibility of any darshan? The glimpse of the reality is darshan of your own self. And hanuman is that mind which is guarding. When the Hanuman is settled and quite, in that quite surface of your mind, that consciousness starts to reflect itself in its complete glory. Allow that mind by which you will enter

through, to quieten down.

Hanuman is the very protection. He is the sentinel god. Hanuman is the mind that is on your path to your own soul. The major block that you might have towards realizing your own self is your own mind. When the mind is tuned, ready, conditioned, only then can you enter into your own self. That which is a major obstacle on the seat of meditation is your own mind. And when that mind is quietened, relaxed, ready and available, only then meditation happens. Until that time Hanuman is waiting, he will not allow. And by praying with devotion and surrender, he will help you enter into your own heart.. Therefore, it is very important to surrender to Hanuman that is your mind.. Once having surrendered to your own mind, entering inside to meet Rama, who is none other than your soul, your atman, it becomes very simple and that’s what meditation is all about.

The surrender to the self is nothing but accepting yourself as you are. Accept your mind for what it is at this moment, in that acceptance of your mind, the mind and you have already come in tune. Then the mind and you are not any more in conflict. There is no more inner conflict between you and your mind. Everything seems to be settling down so well, in that settling down of the mind, you have found the way. The Rama dware has also opened up, the doorway to the heavens is now flung open, wide you just have to walk in.. that Hanuman who is protecting, once you have surrender, opens the door. How? You just surrender to him. You surrender not by doing some Namaskar, Chamatkar, but to sit quietly, to accept, whatever happens in this mind. “This is the divine creation, whatever happens in this mind, I will accept it. I am not going to be neutral, just remaining with it. In remaining neutral with your own mind, with no more fight, that mind now settles down. That settling down

of the mind enables you to enter inside. That is the first time the real meditation has started.

Let that chariot of your mind be driven to Rama and driven to your own inner self, the self which is none other than Rama.

If you keep on saying soul, self; it can become a clueless idea. In order to give it a shape and name it is said Rama, it is said Krishna, it is said Jesus Christ, it is said Inshah Allah. Whatever the name that is given, it is only to indicate. These are just the different pointers that point to something substantial present, the esse4nce inside you. To reach there, taking the support of this Manorath, taking that and going there, you will reap the fruits of having reached the destination of Rama once you sit down and turn around, turn inwards, take this chariot, the support of Hanuman. And then with the support of this chariot, you will move faster towards your inner self.

You have seen that Hanuman is the entrance, the gateway to the soul, the spirit within. If you are convinced, then you are through because Hanuman is your own mind. Hanuman is that mind which is constantly keeping you under all kinds of tensions and agitations. Once the mind is set right, once you are free from the agitations, once you are free from all the tensions, your mind is going to allow you to enter inside and reach for your soul, reach for the spirit. That’s it. This is the key. The key in life is in your own mind.

With over-whelming might you destroyed the Asuras (demons) and performed

all tasks assigned to you by Shri Ram with great skill.

You brought Sanjivan (A herb that revives life) and restored Lakshman

Even Yamraj (God of Death) Kuber (God of Wealth) and the Digpals

(deputies guarding the four corners of the Universe) have been vying

with one another in offering homage to your glories. How then, can a

mere poet give adequate expression of your super excellence.

became Lord of Lanka. This is known all over the Universe.

If at the time of death one enters the Divine Abode of Shri Ram,

thereafter in all future births he is born as the Lord's devotee.
