Guest guest
Dear Amarnath: Om Namah Shivaya I really love the quote you posted. Felt compelled to find out it's origin. It appears Amma said this during a 1999 interview in the Times of India in New Delhi. Portions of the interview can be found by clicking here http://archives.amritapuri.org/matruvani/vol-00/apr00/00mv04divine_mothers_message.htm Here is the question and answer that led to the quote you cited. Question: Can a selfish person be transformed into a selfless person through his or her own effort? Can we change our own nature? Mother: Definitely. If you have a proper understanding of the spiritual principles, your selfishness will diminish. Performing actions without selfishly expecting any benefit is an excellent method to reduce one's selfishness. You should always remember that you are just an instrument in God's hands. You should have the attitude that you are not the doer but that God makes you do everything. If you persist with this attitude, your ego and selfishness will slowly disappear. A man calls out from the top of a staircase, "I'm coming down right now!" But hardly has he taken five steps, when he suffers from a heart attack, staggers and falls down the stairs. My children, the next moment is not in our hands. If we live with the awareness of this truth, how can we be egoistic? As we breathe out, there is no guarantee that we will ever breathe in again. It is God's power that carries us through every moment. If we are aware of this, we will spontaneously be humble, our attitude towards the Almighty will be transformed into an attitude of worship, our focus on Him will blossom with our every step, and we will be successful in our efforts ...
