For your info, I went to temple this morning and saw there was a ghee lamp made by the rice flour above a betel leave. I've missed to join the pradosham yesterday and get to know that one devotee put that lamp yesterday. As long as I know, I've just seen people put ghee lamp made by rice flour to god Amman only. I usually put ghee lamp made of clay to lord shiva every thursday. Can anyone explain to me wheather we can put this type of ghee lamp for lord shiva? The ritually prepared rice-flour should be spread in two banana leaves. In the flour, ghee lamp can be lit, and Lord Shiva can be invoked in the flour-ghee lamp with proper poojaas and recital of Shri Rudram Chamakam, and other Thirumurais. The most auspicious days for performance of this are pradosham days, Mondays, Thursdays, and also Tiruvaadhirai days. This is a highly efficacious pooja which ensures peace, prosperity and development in the family. Blessed be. Pandit. Here, I have some more to ask. a) As u said, the rice flour should be spread into 2 banana leaves means is it that I have to make a big rice flour lamp which fits the 2 banana leaves? b) If I make the rice flour lamp and bring it to temple for pradosham and also thursdays, is it ok? or I should do any pooja or chanting mantra? Coz i always go to temple in morning, always in rush , so I usually, chant 'Om Namah Shivaya' 3 times and also "Trayambakam yejamahe" and round the temple 3 times. Is it correct what i'm doing? c) As u said, can i know what u mean by ritually prepared rice flour lamp? Is it the usual way to prepare or have to chant any mantra while preparing it? Have to add sugar or not? I'm very sorry for asking alot of questions as i'm not very sure and I want to have a clear explanation so that I can share the knowledge with other devotee in my place. Guest guest Posted May 26, 2006 Report Share Posted May 26, 2006 Dear Anuraatha avargal: It is not needed to have a big flour lamp that fits two banana leaves .......The two banana leaves should overlap each other so that the flour from the flour lamp does not get scattered on the ground, and also you can keep other offerings in that extra space comfortably. Yes, you can make the rice flour lamp and take it to the temple (I hope that I am not contradicting any particular rule of the temple where you visit regularly). Namah shivaaya name is quite short and sweet. YOu please try to chant it for more repititions. You can chant the name even as you are going round the temple. Ritually prepared flour means that the flour should be ground with ritual purity (taking head bath, chanting shiva naamam continuously, and with Divine thoughts in your mind). In the flour lamp you should invoke Lord Shiva Himself along with Mother. The burning lamp is Shiva and the flour is Shakti. The ghee you pour into the lamp is your own devotion to the God. It is with this attitude you should light the flour lamp. Till the lamp gets extinguished by itself, you should sit and meditate on the light of the lamp chanting Shiva Shiva or "Om Namah Shivaaya". Any lamp brings in light, which removes darkness or ignorance. Ghee lamp specially brings in Jnana or intelligence.
