Guest guest
Re:Nuclear Pig in a Poke Dear Editor, Sam Nunn asks in his Opinion peice,"How will we explain to other friends-like Brazil, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Japan and South Korea- that India is trusted with nuclear material production but they are not?" The best way to explain it is by refering to the historical record. Unlike these other 'Friends,' India has been invaded 6 times by its neighbors, Pakistan and China. When South Korea, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia were in danger, the US defended them. When China threatens Taiwan, the US responds. However in the case of Democratic India, the US repeatedly sided with Pakistan, despite Pakistan being the aggressor in all four of its invasions of India. Neither the UN nor the US stopped Chinese and Pakistani aggression against India. It was India's nuke tests of 1974 and Soviet support that forced China and Pakistan to back off. Thus we see nearly a 30 year gap between Pakistan's 1971 aggression and its 1999 attack on Kargil. As soon as Pakistan felt empowered by its Chinese supplied Nukes, it once again went on the warpath. So by comparing non-threatened Brazil, US protected South Korea, Japan, Taiwan etc to India, Sam Nunn is revealing both his bias against India and his ignorance of India's unique position as an embattled yet vibrant Democracy with few if any real 'Friends.'
