Dear Temba ~ first, thank you so much for calling. Even though I was not well and had already gone to bed, just knowing you called meant a great deal to me, as you know. In terms of your question, perhaps you are the first to think of this. Amma builds hospitals, homes, schools ... nothing stops Her from anything She sees in the way of a need for Her children. Amma is like the spark that ignites the flame in our hearts. Even in India, all that gets done is possible, at least in part because of all the devotees there who help. They help build the houses; they teach in the schools; they work in the hospitals. Similarly, here in America we are Amma's hands and feet. She ignites us with Her Love, and because of this there are already many Mother's Kitchens. Now you have had this idea (I think ... because I haven't been able to read the digest, I am assuming this is your idea). Think about what happened when you had the idea to bring people who had never seen Amma to see her and the idea for the murals. You started the ball rolling, and then it seemed to take on a life of its own. I believe the idea of a shelter for the homeless or the hurting could happen in a similar way. Perhaps it would only start in one place, but then other Amma devotees would hear of it, and they would want to do it too. There is probably a bit more involved in a shelter than in a food kitchen, and I'm pretty sure that, even with a food kitchen, there are local codes and such that have to be adhered to. Others would see these as blocks and give up. You would jump right over them. Amma does come, and then, yes, She does leave, and many of her American children then feel very bereft. But imagine if that energy of bereavement or longing could be channeled into doing "Amma's Work." Everyone involved would feel that Amma was with them all the time, which, of course, She is. I do think there should be perhaps a "pilot program," a place where this is done for the first time, so that the people doing it find out all that is involved both in starting such a "home" but in keeping it going. Then that would be a model. There would be a "map" for Amma's children in other cities to follow. You might have to get a 501©3 (nonprofit status). I definitely feel this is something that Sw. Dayamrita should be brought in on. Perhaps the program could be umbrellad under the M.A. Center's nonprofit status. This is done all the time. Perhaps the first pilot program should be in the area of the M.A. Center, especially if their 501©3 is involved. Then it could spread like a wave of love. You know, Temba, I believe in you. When you have ideas, things happen. : ) Love ~ your sister, Linda
