Om Namah Sivaya

“Why should you give up the world? Since you must fight, it is wise for you to fight from a fort. You must fight against your sense-organs, against your hunger and thirst. Therefore you will be wise to face the battle from the world.”

----Sri Ramakrishna

Tirumantiram by Rishi Tirumular (verse 2025): Harassing Senses Bring Sorrow

Five the Sense Organs,

Five the Sense-birds, (Jnanendriyas)

Five the Fields (Tanmatras)

The Sense-birds seek to feed,

Five the waters (Kanmendriyas),

Five their functions,

Yet are they of one lineage;

And one the hunter (Jiva)

That herds them together;

Nine the exits of body

Where he in sorrow wanders.

Commentary: The lonely hunter (jiva) brings senses together; but the harassing senses bring sorrow to him.

Bhagavad Gita:

>From Chapter III: The Yoga of Action

25. As the ignorant men act from attachment to action, O Bharata (Arjuna), so should the wise act without attachment, wishing the welfare of the world!

26. Let no wise man unsettle the minds of ignorant people who are attached to action; he should engage them in all actions, himself fulfilling them with devotion.

27. All actions are wrought in all cases by the qualities of Nature only. He whose mind is deluded by egoism thinks: “I am the doer”.

COMMENTARY: The man who is deluded by egoism identifies the Self with the body, mind, the life-force and the senses, and ascribes to the Self all the attributes of the body and the senses. In reality the Gunas of nature perform all actions.

Tirukural by Tiruvalluvar:

(303) Forget anger toward all who have offended you, for it gives rise to teeming troubles.

(304) Anger kills the face's smile and the heart's joy. Does there exist a greater enemy than one's own anger?
