Re: Radiation and  Grace

I know that the effects of radiation aren't immediate. I had a  relative

die 20-25 years after radiation treatment - unquestionably from  the

radiation. But there are a lot of westerners who have lived at

Amritapuri for a very long time now.

And I don't understand how a  person is immune to radiation. It isn't like

being immune to a bacteria in  Mexico.

::Prasadini,

To your first concern, no one is keeping stats at the ashram, are they?  When

people visit and leave, no one is asking if they later get cancer. As to  the

second concern, science doesn't understand it. There is very little on it,

but the article I have read says that somehow their DNA has changed to overcome

the effects of radiation. it's very odd. I think that's why Amma doesn't

bother  with it, because in Her experience it's benign. One can also worry about

the  ridiculous overuse of DDT and worse in the rice that is eaten there. I am

sure  no one measures this. Amma is not terribly concerned with these health

issues. I  am not so sure it is wisdom and not just the general Indian culture

which has  vastly different attitudes than does the West, such as it's all

your karma  anyway, so don't worry about it. If you get cancer, it's your karma.

They just  are not geared to prevention or intervention.   Avram

Dear all,

Namah Shivaya,

Regarding any health concerns about life at Amma's ashram in India, wouldn't it be better to die sooner, yet be closer to God by the time of our deaths?  I can think of no better use of this short earthly existence, than to love & serve our Guru, & to be in her presence.

Um, personally, I've never been to Amritapuri. This is how rumors get

started :-)

I was saying that I thought perhaps Mother protected ashramites and/or

Keralites from the radiation. The rest of my comments were in response

to someone else's post. Long story, I guess. I wish someone would force

me to stay at the ashram.

PS - I am already getting plenty of lessons on how we are not this body.

My husband (who is Jewish) just told me this joke relevant to this

bodily suffering.

A Jewish guy dies and goes to heaven. When he gets there he asks someone

in charge if he can speak to God, as he is a representative for the

Jewish folks on Earth. The person in charge says "sure". So he goes into

the room where God is sitting and says "The folks on Earth wanted me to

ask you a question, is it true that the Jews are the chosen people?" God

says "Yes." The guy says "Will you choose somebody else next time?"
