The Power of 1 Minute – (public programme)

Q. What made you want to lead such a different type of life?

A. From my childhood I had the wish to make my life special and to know the

purpose of my life. I felt that going to school was not totally necessary

for me.. I went and studied what was necessary and then finished school at the

age of 13. I wanted to study what was important for me; arithmetic and

English. I had a lot of love for God and because my intellect was not caught up

in useless things I was able to get good marks. I knew instinctively what was

good for me. I didn’t want to become a disciple of a guru or to make anyone

else my disciple. The interest I had was in God. I wanted to know where God

was and what He was like. I started studying the scriptures from the age of

5. I studied the scriptures and heard many good stories but I didn’t really

know God. I tried to engage my mind in God but I found I wasn’t able to. I

made a decision about what to do with my life at the age of 19 years of age..

Q. You say that your relationship with God is the source of your spiritual

power. Could you tell us about your spiritual practice and the role that God

has played in allowing you to develop your spiritual power.

A. There are many ideas of what and who God is. I was sure that my life

couldn’t be clear without God in it. My initial experience was through Brahma

Baba. I knew that he too was searching a lot. Through his attitude, vision and

feelings I could see how he was forging a relationship with God. I had

chanted a lot and taken the name of God a lot but then I saw how Brahma Baba

started to spend time in silence. I used to watch him to see what he was doing

in silence. I saw silence and peace on his face and when I went near him I

also felt a current of power which took me beyond the physical body. In that

state I felt the presence of God. I began to experiment with this method

myself of going into silence. There was no need to say anything in words. That

was the state of going inside in silence and then taking the mind up above

and forging a relationship with God. It then as if you are here but you are

receiving power from up above. From that moment I knew what I had to do with

my life. It is now 70 years since that experience and in my lifeI have never

had to ask what to do or how to do it.

Q. Can you tell us how we can have a silent mind while we are so busy in our

lives.

A. Sometimes I feel amused because people seem to know how to make their

minds peaceless but they don’t know how to make their minds peaceful. They can

spend a lot of time to think about useless things. They take on the

suffering of others which is really something they don’t need to do. Isn’t it a

waste of time to think about the past? People also think a lot about the things

of other people; they can spend the whole day on these things. When you go

inside and think about the self then your intellect changes completely. The

past is the past - it is finished. To think about the past makes you unhappy

in the present. People see others and do the same or they do things to show

others . they don’t think of what they need to do. They often don’t think

about the consequences of what they do. To do something and regret it

afterwards is not sensible. To behave like this is not our dignity. I have to keep

looking at my own conscience and seeing if something I am thinking to do is

the right thing for me to do. Dignity is to do what God wants me to do – to

do what is useful to others. I have to make my own thoughts peaceful,

elevated and determined. I should have ideas and thoughts that are useful, not just

think of the things that I want all the time but of what will be really

useful.

Q. These appear to be the things of the heart that you are talking about;

about educating the self in the right way.

A. God is my mother and father and is a very good teacher. I have

experienced hearing the words of God through the mouth of Brahma Baba in such a way

that everything became crystal clear. Hearing such things has allowed my head

to remain very cool. Here we don’t study in a conventional sense; we listen

to the things of God personally and they touch the heart, the soul. He is

explaining the essence of everything. He is telling me to be cautious and pay

attention; to engage my mind up above. When the mind is engaged in this way,

the intellect doesn’t wander around. I am then able to catch the things I

need to learn for myself. Then the heart that was experiencing sorrow is able

to sort everything out and becomes peaceful. Until now I consider myself and

student. The life of student is the best.

Q. Sometimes things happen that people find hard to forgive. How can we

dispel bitterness from the heart?

A. Human beings have four virtues; forgiveness, mercy, love and truth. But

because they don’t use them due to begin influenced by the atmosphere of the

world they are not able to experience them. The things that happen to people

through others become so fixed in their minds that they are not able to let

go of them; not able to forgive. If you don’t forgive and forget you will

experience sorrow every day and you will also give sorrow. You may have done

something without even meaning to which has hurt another. If so, you need to

go to that person and ask for forgiveness. Someone with humility and truth

will immediately ask for forgiveness. They will not find it difficult to say

that another has experienced sorrow through them. One who is his own friend

and the friend of others will want to ask for forgiveness. If I do something

wrong I have to pull my own ears. I need to turn to God and ask Him for

forgiveness. I don’t need to give reasons or excuses for doing what I did..

Q. If someone has done something you find unforgiveable then what can you

tell your own heart that will help forgiveness to grow there?

A. We need to understand some aspects in this; if someone does something to

me today then I can consider that I did something to them in the past and

the return is coming to me. Secondly, that this is a test for me. If it is my

mistake then I can admit it. Nowadays people react very quickly and reject –

saying ‘this is not right’. Actually, one must try to understand others..

Today someone may not understand me but tomorrow he may. We should never react

or reject but use our understanding. There is great benefit in not rejecting

or reacting; there will then automatically be respect for the other. To have

respect is a matter of great benefit. It is important in life to understand

the self. Not to say; well, I know, I know everything. No, let me understand

myself very deeply and keep learning. Has my heart become so crystal clear

through honesty that God understands my heart? If I am this clear (Dadi

showed a beautiful crystal heart) then others will understand me. These days

husband and wife don’t understand each other, father and son don’t understand

each other and this is because they are one thing inside and another outside.

Q. Please tell us about the power of good wishes.

A. First my attitude should be one of renunciation; not to think ‘I want

this, that and the other’. If it is like that then whatever I do will be with

desire and what I do for others will be full of desire. Then even if I think

of God, I will think of Him with the hope of fulfilling my desires. My

feeling will then not be true because I am expecting something. In fact, God

gives when the soul has pure feelings; when I have the thought to take from Him

and give to others. Even in this I have to be free from the expectation of

return. I should not want that they will recognize what I am doing. I just

have to give without the thought of return otherwise I become like a beggar.. A

master is one who doesn’t have tendencies of slavery – subservience. If

someone has desires they cannot be a master. Dadi always has the thought to

learn a lot and become something. Even when I give to others, I should not

expect the return. It is very important not to let our good wishes for others

diminish due to any reason. When we stay near to God all our own wishes are

fulfilled and there is then no desire for my own self. There is then

automatically renunciation. There should be so much royalty in me; I don’t need

anything. My attitude is then that I am beyond all the things of ‘push and pull’.

Then whatever I need will come to me. I should never have a thought, I don’t

have this. I have everything.

Q. It seems that chasing after pleasure of any kind actually pushes

happiness away?

A. In fact, in every situation we have to learn to be happy. We don’t have

to worry what others say, they will say many things but I have to understand

what is right and what is wrong, what is good and what is bad. I need to

understand how to turn things around. I should never have doubts in my mind.. If

you do have a question, just remain very peaceful inside and the answers

will come. If you have a spiritual friend you can talk to them and verify your

feelings. When you understand something then practice it; your own practice

will help you understand. Never be afraid but allow yourself to go inside

and understand things. We have to stop looking outside and look inside.

Nowadays even children say they don’t have time. In fact, no-one can say they

don’t have time to look at the self. All you have to do is to ask; what is going

on inside of me? If you become influenced by the things of outside then you

will worry and keep thinking about those things; whether it is the things of

the self or the things of others. So I have to look inside and see whether

something is right or wrong for me. If something is right and good for me

then no-one can stop me doing that. What is not right for me to do will be done

by someone else. If human beings learn to think and spend their time in the

right way they can become angels. It is human beings who have made this

world into a type of hell. They know how to earn a lot of money and to lose it.

We can earn a spiritual income through the quality of our thinking, through

using our time in a worthwhile way. As human beings we should not become

dependant on anything. We have to give co-operation and take co-operation. God

has given me understanding, he has taught me, He has given me company and He

has given me support. Take these things from God and you will become a tower

of peace in the world. I have to do this now. Don’t wait for others; just

think – I am the one who has to do this now and show the way to others.
