Statistics vary, but on the conservative side, experts estimate more than $10 billion in assets remain unclaimed in the United States alone. Those unclaimed assets range from the important to the mundane. For example, the Internal Revenue Service said last fall it was looking for 99,042 taxpayers whose checks were returned.
