I too noticed some westerners at Amma' and Sai baba's ashram that seemed to take very badly to the food and environment. That almost seemed intent on punishing themselves..they looked alarmingly sick and would do too strict pratices like sitting all day doing a mantra and clicking a clicker to count it. Not that there is anything wrong with that...but they didn't seem to be enjoying it.. getting joy from it..they seemed depressed and fanatical, imbalanced. I think this goes beyond food to a poverty like mental state. I beleive that they had a belief system that said that sadhana was about depriving and torturing yourself, and that India was difficult. These beliefs and karmas were deeply rooted. There were westerners that just thrived at the ashrams. It looked like someone had plugged them into a electric socket. So, along with the food, the right mental attitude (faith) is important. So much of this is karmic. Gayatri looked to me like she was really going down hill health wise, and I personally think it was a good thing that she left. It made me sad just to see her.
