Guest guest
Jaya Jagannatha Dear Arjun, Namaste the glory of ruby and sun was evident in vedas, puranas, upanishads, shastras and in itihasas (mahabharat). in the indian context, i would not be exaggerating if i say that original rubies have become extinct, except with few kings (who inherited) or in museums. few burmese rubies are found better than the ordinary rubies available elsewhere. Wrong statement. The items in the museum or inherited by kings are identified as red spinel. Love, Swee

Guest guest
Sri Arjun ji, It may not be all that correct to say that High priced Burmese Rubies are Spinels. Having dealt in Gem stones for some years and having bought and sold both Burmese Rubies/Neelams, Pokhrajs and Neelams from Sri Lanka in sizable quantities, I can say that Number one Numero Uno Rubies and Neelams come from Mogok mines of Burma followed by other countries. I will not call myself an expert but I do have good experience with precious and semi precious stoones. I have found synthetic Pink rubies give wonderful results and so do Yellow sapphires. Guest guest
|| Hare Rama Krishna || Namaste Arjun ji and others, I think there is an error in communication or understanding when we say that all rubies are really red spinels. They could have been some by maharajas but not to generalize it. Further, lets wait for Swee ji to comment on this as I think we are construding our understanding of her statements which ( I am sure!) can not mean to say that all rubies are red spinels !!! In todays world, while its true that most of the Ruby commercially available are at the least heated to enhance the color, one can still acquire Natural fine Burmese gems mined in Mong Hsu. Longeedo mind from Africa is also not that bad of a specimen. Namaste Gaurav Jain In a message dated 2/16/2006 2:10:44 P.M. Guest guest
Namaskaar Sri Arjuna Ruby is Red Corundum. It is available. I have seen many samples with my sister in law who is a qualified Gemmologist from GII. I have myself checked it under Refractrometer and have measured its specific gravity. I suggest you get your Gems tested from Jhandewalan lab (if you are in Delhi), they will give a certificate of the Gem being a Ruby or a Spinel. Spinels are singly refractive whereas Rubies are doubly refractive. One can use a Dicroscope for checking the same too, if one knows how to use it. It is simple if you want to learn. Spinel is less hard than a Ruby and usually have a pinkish tinge. Single refractiveness gives it a similar quality to that of a Diamond as Diamonds are singly refractive too. Now about Burmese Rubies - They are chrome Red Spinels. Spinels are magnesium aluminium oxide. So when chrome is added, it give amazing brilliance. Moreover, spinels can be given the same cut as a Diamond, that can really bring the play of light, sometimes making it more attractive than a Ruby. Guest guest
Dear Sriman, Burmese rubies are rubies (red corundum), and Burmese spinels are spinels. The world's best rubies and spinels BOTH come from Burma (Myanmar). The real problem is the synthetics of both. The best test to ID difference between natural spinel and synthetic spinel is by Refractive Index. RI for synthetic spinel is 1.728 with a slight variance and the natural is 1.718. Testing the difference between natural (real) rubies and synthetic man-made rubies is more complicated. BUYER BEWARE!!! Best rgds, Richard > Now about Burmese Rubies - They are chrome Red Spinels. Guest guest
Namaskaar Sri Richard Thank you for correcting me. In olden days, there was no distinction made between rubies and spinels. Many of the finest Spinels were considered Rubies, till their differences were found out. I was trying to bring that to notice but suggested as if all rubies are spinels. If other wants, I have references to spot synthetic gemstones from real ones. I can prepare a post if others would like it. Guest guest
Dear Bharatji, Namaste!!! Yes, the test to separate REAL from synthetic ruby is 3 easy steps: 1) Submit unknown red object to a bona fide gem lab 2) Pick up unknown red object along with certificate of ID 3) Read certificate of ID You're right, even the Timur Ruby in the crown jewels of England is factually a much softer red spinel. Clean (flawless) Red spinel is a very good substitute for the very costly clean (flawless) ruby. At 10-20 times cheaper than comparable ruby Best rgds, Richard vedic astrology, "Bharat Hindu Astrology" <hinduastrology wrote: > > Namaskaar Sri Richard > > Thank you for correcting me. I am more into learning gemology and thus look to understand the identification processes and also to study how synthetic gemstones are made.
