The Winter Solstice is always on December 21 and is the shortest day

of the year where as Uttarayana always starts around January 14th

which is the Makar Sankranti of the Sun. Can any one give the exact

scantific reason for the difference between Makar Sankranti and the

Winter Solstice? Nice if one could post a picture of these orbital

terms and explain in details. If this has been already explained, can

one give me the link to that site?

Namaste Ashok,

This difference is called as Ayanamsha.

If you have JHora or some other Jyotish Software. In the

Preferences;Related To Calculations;Ayanamsha. Select Sayana(Tropical).

Enter a new chart for the Date 22 December. You will see Sun in zero degree

of Capricorn(Makar). This date keeps changing due to various other

movements of Sun and Earth. The Jyotish calculations keeps the marking

constant to offset for this difference and hence a value called Ayanamsha is

subtracted. Hence you see the dates changing.

Warm Regards

Namaste,

Winetr solastice is NOT always on Dec 21. Infact the precession of axis

makes it go back every year. It goes back by 1 day every 72 years or so. So

in 72 years from now it will be dec 20 and so on.

....

Namaskaar Sri Ashok

Whenever any measurement is taken in space, it is with a reference point. In

topical, the position of the Earth is taken to be around Sun. However if we

were to check Earth's return with respect to some constellation, it would be

different. This difference is Ayanamsha.

So it depends how you are measuring the same.

There is a new method which is being used in Physics. Instead of taking 3

dimensions of Space, they take the 4 dimensional Space-Time as standard. In

such a case, all planets, including Sun have linear motion with respect to

time and angular motion with respect to each other. The combined motion is a

vector. I can't even imagine how it would change our view of the Universe

and position of the Earth. Without complicating everyone's mind any further,

I am returning back to the basics.

Thanks and Regards

Bharat
