Combinations in 8th give you frustration, but make you a king when involved in Vipareeta Rajayoga etc. Mercury in the 8th does wonders. Then remember, Rasi chart is not the sole thing. I can't write much here and don't expect me to know all astrological reasons. But, I know one thing for certain - it was not due to gemstones.
