It has watered down to its present state because people are more interested in materialistic things and things like career and marriage. Basically, mission of each and every human being born in this world is....absolving oneself of evil karmas, increasing punya karmas, and with the power of the punya as support to engage in spiritual pursuits and work for realization of one's own soul, and... eventually merging with Divine. Astrology teaches us things like which form of Deity should one worship so that spiritual progress comes faster (Though different forms exist ultimately it leads to Paratma only as Lord Krishna has clearly mentioned in his Bhagavat Gita. The only condition is that such worship should be without any materialistic goal as the objective). Divisional charts like Siddhamsa guide us in this regard. Based on the temperament of a person, one of the 3 ways to yoga can show the way to final liberation of the soul. 1) Bhakti yoga for a humble, sensitive and affectionate person. 2) Gnana yoga for the satwik but philosophically oriented person with abundance of accumulated merit that is likely to be enjoyed as intelligence of a high order. 3) Karma yoga for a person with rajasic tendencies in his horoscope. He has to indulge in physical activities employing all his physical and mental prowess, win over rajasic nature by constant service and finally attain God-realization. The dispostion of Lagna lord, karakamsa, etc. will guide us in this regard. Basically the exaltation, debilitation, etc. of different planets is synchronous to the abundance or deficiency of qualities and elements in the person signified by the nativity. Astrology lays down the limitations so that we understand them, work on our weaknesses, and finally go beyond them to taste Divine Bliss. Great yogis, and Gnanis who have burned away all their karma can actually live beyond astrology and the influence of planets.
