In the early 1940s, somatic stress researchers found

that stress manifested itself differently on mental

and physical planes. Physical effects included the

classic ‘fight-or-flee’ response — tight muscles,

rapid and shallow breathing, increased blood pressure

and heart rate, adrenaline secretion and sweating. The

cognitive effects of stress were listlessness,

concentration and memory problems and loss of

motivation.

The two-fold or psychophysical manifestation of stress

led to a simple, but profound, means of stress-relief

— corrective relaxation and breathing techniques.

These were already known to the ancients.

The key insight of yoga, for example, is that it is

literally impossible to be anxious and relaxed at the

same time. In modern parlance, this is expressed as an

inverse relationship between relaxation and anxiety.

In practical terms, whatever promotes relaxation also

leads to reduction of anxiety.Progressive muscle

relaxation (PMR), which is similar to the conscious

unwinding of tension envisaged in the yogic shavasana

or the corpse pose, is a method designed to teach how

to recognise involuntary muscle tension and relax

muscle groups, to minimise negative stress. MORE

Perseverance is the key to success

Remember that making mistakes is part of learning.

Helga’s first try at establishing her jewelry store

failed. After re-evaluating her experience, she opened

another jewelry store. Helga is now the proud owner of

three successful stores.

Helga didn’t fail in her first attempt. Failure occurs

when we quit or stop trying. Helga has perseverance -

“stick-to-itiveness.”

Perseverance is the key to success. After thousands of

efforts to make the electric light bulb, Thomas Edison

said, “I haven’t failed, I’ve identified 10,000 ways

that it doesn’t work.” Mario Lemieux, Helen Keller,

Abraham Lincoln, Marie Curie and an endless list of

other great achievers found that success inevitably

arrives for everyone who perseveres.

Acquiring a desired job or promotion, or succeeding at

business may present difficulties. But this is part of

the learning process. Ultimately, people who persevere

become successful. They learn from mistakes.

Do you persevere? Or, after meeting rejection or

difficulties, do you quit?

Test Your Perseverance QuotientRate yourself – on a

scale of one to three, one being low and three being

high – on each of the following:MORE ON...........

Treating The Cancer By Scientific Yoga

With modern medicine unable to find a cure for cancer,

victims of the dreaded disease are looking for

alternative avenues. Most cancer specialists agree

Yoga is the most effective alternative treatment

available. Cancer is a condition where the human cells

divide uncontrollably and form a tumour which affects

the functioning of the normal cells. Allopathy tries

to destroy the tumour and arrest its further growth

through surgery, medication and radiation. Yoga

experts explain uncontrolled cell multiplication as

human energy (prana shakti) gone haywire due to

internal disturbances. more on..............
