Pranams to the esteemed members..

Please could you clear a doubt about proper calender date for Krishna

Janmasthami and timings for auspicious days as stated below. Really

apreciate the help and info....

Except : "Now Krsna-janma-astami is celebrated on the 8th day

(astami) of the dark moon of Hrishikesh maas (August). Generally

eight days after Full Moon (This year it falls on 19 August), so

naturally it would seem rather straight forward because eight days

after Full moon means that Krsna –janma astami falls on Saturday

27th. But no it's not that clear cut. This year the 8th day (astami)

starts at 05h01 on Friday the 26th August and ends the following

morning Saturday at 05h43. The sunrise time for Durban is 06h22.

(This time is from www.thesunrisetimes.com). According to the Vedic

calendar whichever tithi (day) is transiting at the time of sunrise

is the tithi (day). So on the 26th of August at 06h22 (sunrise)

astami (i.e. the 8th day) is transiting. So the ruling day is Astami.

Thus Krsna astami falls on this day (the 26th). Now why not the 27th.

Well astami ends on Saturday morning at 05h43 and Navami (the 9th

day) starts. The sunrise time for Saturday is 06h21. So at that point

in time Navami is transiting so navami becomes the ruling day. So you

do not have to be a rocket scientist to figure out the date given on

the calendars is incorrect.

A question??? But why is India celebrating Krsna-Janma-astami on

Saturday. Well India is experiencing summer and we are experiencing

end winter. Now in summer the sunrise times are at least two hours

behind (i.e. around 05h00). Remember I said that Vedic times are

different from the Gregorian times. India's Astami is on Saturday

thus they celebrate it on Saturday and not Friday as we do. "

So the question has got to do with how do we judge which day to start

the fast (according to which planetary timings)? How does the

Northern Hemisphere have one date for fasting and celebrating and the

Southern Hemisphere (South Africa) have another ?

Will really appreciate any info you may have

Thanks

Kind Regard

Athmun

Dear Shri.Athmun,

Krishna janmashtami / Gokulashtami for Sivets and

At Johannesburg and Durban in South Africa the above

the reason Friday 26th the Sun rises at around 6.22

am along with Ashtami thithi and goes on for nearly

for 21.21 hours ie., upto 4.50 am on 27 th August

Sri Gurubhyoh namaha

Dear Sri.Rajkumam,

In India Birth day of Lord Krishna is celebrated as SriKrishna Janmashtami,

Gokulashtami and SriJayanhi.

1)Sri Krishna, as per Puranas, was born on Krishnapaksha(waning moon) Ashtami

thithi coinciding with Rohini Nakshatra at 12 midnight in the lunar month

of "Sravana".

Nowadays, very rarely Ashtami and Rohini coincides in the month of Sravana.

People whose convention, as injuncted by their respective Paramacharyas,

is to follow on Ashtami

thithi celebrate the festival giving importance to thithi(that is on 26.08.2005).

Other people whose convention is to follow Rohini Nakshatra celebrate the

festival giving importance to Nakshatra (that is on 27.08.2005).

2)The reference point of reckoning the thithi is atleast four fold, if not

more, in India as devised by various Rishis and followed by people. This could

also be another reason in some of the years.

1.Sunrise as reference (generally followed by people who follow Lunar(Luni

Solar) Calender)

2.Sunset as reference (generally followed by people of Tamil Nadu)

3.Midnight as reference (generally followed in Bengal)

4.Duration of thithi for 1hour and 24 minutes from Local Mean Noon. (generally

followed in Kerala)

Trust this clarifies to some extent,

Request learned Gurus to throw more light on this.

Regards

AJP Iyer.
