Sub: Kundalini and Scriptures

Many learned people have written with good references about

Kundalini and its awakening. Still any discussion on spiritual

matters is like the proverbial blind men describing the

elephant. Every one is correct in their experience and

expression and nobody is totally right – as even truth is

temporal as seen in Gayathri Upasana – by describing Truth as

temporal (Satyam) and otherwise (Rutam).

Any how let us see what scriptures say about Kundalini and its

awakening. Perhaps Adishankara is the the Authority and

describes that in Srividya propagated by Him. The Great Lalita

Sahasra namam puts the essence and stages of this spiritual

process.

To quote from that “ Mulaadhaaraika Nilaya Brhma Grandhi

Vibhedini, maNipuraantha ruditaa Vishnu Grandhi Vibhedini, Ajna

Cakrantaraalasta Rudra Grandhi Vibhedini”

These three describe explicitly the necessary and sufficient

conditions and steps in the natural spiritual process of

Kundalini and its awakening.

By its very nature Kundalini or essence of Jivaatma lies in the

lower Chakra of Muuladhara. But before it can start its

evolution there are two necessary steps. These are best

described by Sri Aurobindo in his book “Mother” as the Sadhana

or Effort of Student and the Descent or Grace of Guru. With the

combining of these two through many Janmas the process of

Kundalini and its awakening starts. The first step of the

process is Brahma Grandhi Vibhedini – there is big road block of

Knot which is to be literally untied for the progress to occur.

This is the first stage of evolution in the three steps of

Srushthi Sthiti and Laya. This process of spiritual evolution

may be painful or blissful as per the experience of individual

student. It is like the road block can be a pain if one is

coming too fast in the vehicle or controlled happy journey. It

is why traditional vedic system suggests that GURU is essential

for progress in this Brahma Vidya. This unknotting may follow

with physical side effects like digestion system being effected

etc. The second stage of experience is the progress from

Manipura through Anahata – the seat of Vishnu and unknotting of

that Grandhi. The final stage is the unknotting of Rudra

grandhi.

What happens then is revealed in next line “

Sahasraarabhajarudhaa Sudha saraabhi VarshiNi” – After reaching

Sahasra dala padma there is only Bliss of the rejoining of

Jivatma and Parmatma – Continuous raining of SUDHA and

enjoyment. Infact that stage is defined as “ Nitya Satya Sudhdha

Budha Sundara Siva Prakasha “ . This is traditionally defined as

the Union (Yuga) of Siva and Sakthi . As defined in the first

sloka of Saundarya Lahiri of Adi Shankara “ When Siva is united

with sakthi only he is powerful” – with out that union Siva is

incapable of moving a blade of grass.

Thus this Kundalini and its awakening is a spiritual evolution

to get Awareness – it is common and universal irrespective of

the method one follows – nay what ever may be the religion one

follows. This Awareness may be called by different names and may

be of different nature as we progress to our spiritual goal.

Infact the search for God may be defined only as different

stages of awareness – like – we may RECOGNIZE that God is there

but there may not be any experience. At second stage HIS

REVELATION may expand our awareness of HIM. At the final stage

WE may REALIZE HIM and thus become Aham Brahmasmi or other Brhma

Vakya to describe THAT STATE.

In this process always there will be side effects – From cave

man to present day the evolution is always had two components –

Power and Knowledge. Caveman had Fire and we have Nuclear Power.

With out Knowledge of when how and why to use that power man is

doomed to fall only. Power alone when used makes one become a

Rakhasa like Ravana. Knowledge with out using that power leads

to so many evolved souls who have enjoyed the final bliss but

could not help the ordinary mortals. Thus power and knowledge go

hand in hand and should be balanced – Imbalance of these is the

real reason for side effects in Kundalini and its awakening. The

power may manifest as many occultic powers like Animadi 10

sidhdhis, Brhamyadi Ashta Lakshmis and sarva Samkshobinyadi 10

sakthis. And many other powers.

How to achieve this Kundalini and its awakening is further

amplified in Lalita sahasra nama – “ Mulladharbjarudha – panca

vaktra – asthi samsthita- Amkusaadi praharaNa –varadaadi

nishevita – Mudgaudanasakta hrudaya Yakinyamba svarupini “

The one lying at Mulladhara has five faces and is controlling

bone structure of physical body , has Amkusa etc as weapons and

is very free in granting boons and is to be propiated by

Mudgaudanam ( Cereals + green gram ) and is with sakthis called

Yakini.

Infact there is big process for this in Srividya of Adishankara

– infact in every puja what ever may be the path – certain

premilinaries are essential – Nyasa – Which is activating

different centres in Pindaanda ( our body) – these include 14

essential rivers besides the three Nadis, and different devathas

( which are part of three crore essential Devathas)., Bhuta

sudhdhi, and purifying this gross body. This gross body is not

suitable for sadhana and is to be cleaned by burning to ashes,

creating a divine body out of the ashes and do prana pratishtha

and then only carry out sadhana. Ofcourse all this may be as

Vibhavana or Conceptulization. The very purpose of sadhana is

defined again in Lalita sahasra nama as Ahamityeva Vibhavaye

Bhaviniim - the purpose of sadhana is to have recognition

revelation and realization that – Doer , The methodology and

Receiver are identical. Thus Kundalini and its awakening is

well documented in our scriptures and best learnt through GURU.
