Dear Narasimha,

You are right. Jataka Parijata does say 7th house for Mercury. It also

fives additional conditions for the Marana effects to occur in these

houses which are,"..tasminpaapayute.athavaa paapadrishte.arineechasthe

durbale duKkhamaapnuyaat". So the planet will have to be in Marana

Karana Sthana with a malefic or aspected by malefic or in Neecha Rasi

and weak for it to give sorrow (dukkha).

Sanjay, perhaps, relies on Sthana vishesha where planets can not give

their effects and where the condition of being with malefic etc. are

not ,apparently, applicable. Incidentally it is interesting that the

first Maranakarana Sthana shlokas appear in adhyaaya, which deals with

Kalachakra dasha(Adhyaaya 17), whereas one not requiring malefic

association as a condition appears in Adhyaaya 2 related to Graha

swarupa. The relevant shlokas are:

Namaste,

On vedic astrology , there has been a discussion on whether

Mercury's marana karaka sthana is 7th or 4th and on the significance of

marana karaka sthanas.

Sanjay ji gave 7th as Mercury's marana karaka sthana earlier, but

changed it to 4th recently. I am not sure of the classical basis he has

for 4th, but the reverred classic "Jataka Parijatam" I think mentions

7th for Mercury. JHora uses 7th and not 4th.

I have explained the basis and significance of marana karaka sthana in

one of my lessons (link below). I will summarize quickly.

These are the houses where the planets are most uncomfortable/feel

awkward. To do justice to the house they occupy, they have to work

extra hard and, in the process, the houses they own suffer. Thus,

houses/karakatwa owned by planets in marana karaka sthana suffer.

Sun is the significator of ego. He feels awkward in the 12th house of

overcoming ego. Jupiter likes peace. He feels awkward in the 3rd house

of weapons and boldness. Mars is the significator of wars and fighting.

He is very comfortable in the 6th house. But, if you place him in the

7th house and tell him to give somebody a relationship and marriage, he

will feel awkward about it. Similarly, Venus is the giver of love,

relationships and marriage. If you place him in the 6th house of war

and bachelorhood, he will be most uncomfortable there. Rahu, the planet

of adharma, naturally feels awkward in the 9th house of dharma,

religion and temple. Saturn is the giver of disease and suffering. If

you place him in the 1st house of health and tell him to take care of

someone's health, he will naturally feel awkward.

Thus, marana karaka sthanas of planets are places where they are not

comfortable and where they have to work extra hard to do justice. In

the process, other promises of the planet suffer.

May Jupiter's light shine on us,

Narasimha
