Guest guest
Dear Gurus, Had a query on the Pearl as a gemstone, and would like to get your comments. Is Pearl really a gemstone ? When we talk about the other gemstones used in Astrology like Diamond, Emerald, Sapphire, Red Coral etc, they are all in the stone category and are obtained from the depths of the earth. But a Pearl does not really fall in that category, as it is obtained from an Oyster - from the animal kingdom, so to speak. Hence my question - Is is really a gemstone ? Second, what is so special about the Moon that its gemstone is not to come from the depths of the earth, but from an animal. Why is it unique in this sense ? Any stories or legends about this or the significance of the source of Pearls ? Thanks a lot, Pratibha
Guest guest
Jaya Jagannatha Dear James, Namaste According to the shastras, there are many Pearls from many sources. Some from bamboo (even coconut!), hail storms, patina fish, wild boars, from rain, elephants, snakes etc etc, but the most readily available is from oysters. Garuda Purana relates the creation of the pearl as such: Where the seeds of the beautiful pearl fell and water from the clouds too fell, and both together entered the oyster shell and were converted into Pearls. A person in possession of such a fine white Pearl of proper size with commendable features will be free from all evils and faults. Guest guest
Om Namo Bhagawate Vasudevay Dear Pratibha, Namaste. It may be of interest to note that not only pearl but also Red coral, White Coral and some other gems used in vedic astrology remedial measures are also not STONES really. Red Coral is an animal shell like product which resembles bones in characteristics and nails in the process of formation. To understand the importance and significance of the main 9 gems for 9 planets, one has to refer to puranas and other scriptures. Only 84 Gems are listed for use in remedial mesures traditionally. As per Agni Puran and other Pauranic references origin of various gems is ascribed to various body parts and emotions of Daityaraj Bali, formed when Shri Vishnu in Vaaman Avtaar asked for three steps of land in Daan from him, after he had won over the devas and their territorries including all the lokas in Devasur Sangram. Being Happy from Bali by his donation and large-heartedness, Lord Vaaman (Jupiter incarnate) blessed his body by touching his forehead with his feet. On this, the body of Bali turned into various gems. As per another story it was Balasur. Varahmihira mentions in Brihatsamhita origin of gems to be from BALI (same story), Maharshi Dadhichi (from whose bones Vajra was made - parts of these bones fallen on earth during making of the Vajra are supposed to have turned into Diamonds) and also as per some other sources due to various internal (physical and chemical) properties of mother earth. However, the references which relate various body parts of Bali/Balasur/Dadhichi to gems; mention that the pearl was born out of the MANA of the Asura. This is the reason that Pearl or Moti is related to MANA, and therefore to Moon, the significator of MANA. Pearl is unique in respects more than one, including the fact that it is not sold by carat. It is sold by "CHAVAs" as unit of weight measurement. It is not out of place to mention that originally 14 RATNAs were churned out of the ocean during Samudra-Manthana, in which there was only one gem or MANI, namely Kaustubh-MANI. However, as per modern colour therapy and gemology, the gems are classified into precious, semi-precious and common as per various parameters including Hardness, refractive index, crystalline structure, shine, transparency, availability, degradability or stability and other physical and chemical properties. Whether this is of any help, I wonder. RadheKrishna. Om Shri Krishnarpanamastu.
