Please help me - how to calculate houses from lagna or 1st rashi?

I am trying to learn astrology, every note, study material I am referring saying

1st house, 2nd house so on. How I should calculate 1st house, 2nd house? Is that

from Lagna? or 1- Mesh?

Please clear me this this will help me in further study. I dont want to assume anything.
