Dear Jyotisas,

January 10 is Hanuman Jayanti. I read an interesting article on Hanuman in the

Fridays edition of the Hindu newspaper and thought that I would share it with

you all.

According to the article which is titled ‘A fresh look at the bachelor deity’ by

Lakshmi Devnath, there are nine forms of Hanuman or Anjaneya. One of these forms

is known as the Kalyana Anjaneya or more specifically the Suvarchala Anjaneya. A

temple dedicated to Suvarchala Anjaneya was built in 1999 in the village of

Thailavaram near Maraimalainagar on the Chennai-Tiruchi highway. The consort

of Hanuman is Suvarchala Devi, the daughter of Surya who taught Anjaneya the

Vedas. A temple which has the nine forms of Anjaneya is located at Ongole while

the Kanyaka Parameswari temple at Masulipatnam has a sculpture of the Suvarchala

Anjaneya. Nice photos of the Thailavaram temple and the idols are given in the

paper. The full name of the deity at this temple is Suvarchala Devi Sametha

Chaturbhuja Subhamangala Varada Anjaneya.

The scriptural reference is verses 8-14 of Parasara Samhita where a story about

the Suvarchala Anjaneya is mentioned. There was a rishi named Pushkar who

initiated two people into the dwadasakshari mantra of Suvarchala Hanumath and

the story is about the contrasting attitude between the learned scholar and the

tribal essentially driving home the point that medidation on the Guru and utmost

faith are necessary for the mantra to have full effect. Interestingly the mantra

is not mentioned but a verse in a sloka of Hanuman Mangalastakam is given:

“Suvarchalaa kalathraaya chaturbhuja dharaaya cha

Ushtraa roodhaya veeraya mangalam Sri Hanumathe”

(or) “Salutations to Lord Hanuman, having four arms, accompanied by his consort

Suvarchala Devi, seated on a camel and exhibiting extraordinary valor”

I hope you enjoyed reading this. I also request the learned scholars to comment on this.

The questions I have is: what are the nine forms of Anjaneya? Why camel as the

carrier for Anjaneya? What is the mantra mentioned and is it prasiddhi? I am

intrigued by the two spellings of Hanuman and Hanumath. Is there any deep

understanding?

Regards

Hari

It is an interesting article. moreso because Hanuman

(Anjaneya) is known to nithya brahmachari. In India

one can find many temples with dieties contradicting

atleast some of the puranas. Similar example is

Lakshmi Vinayaka. Ganapathy is also known to be

brahmachari. The story is that Ganapathy always says

"tommorow" to the request for marriage and it never

took place.

"Hanuman" is a name but "Hanumathe" means "te Hanuman"

"Hanuman"+"te"= Hanumathe or it could be taken as

tasya Hanumanasya mangalam (mangalam Sri Hanuman).

Hence there is nothing special about the spelling.

I hope this helps

Suresh
