Guest guest
||| Hare Rama Krishna ||| Dear Bharat, Namaskaar. I was fortunate to have been a part of a conference where someone discussed their observations as to whether the 7 or the 8 Karakas should be used. Here is some of the material, which can either be verified, or dismissed by the objective student. (BPHS will never fully be grasped by me in this lifetime, but here are some things to reflect upon.) Paräsara: BPHS 34.1-2 Mahaåñi Paräsara speaks of two carakäraka schemes6 involving (1) seven planets from Sun to Saturn and (2) eight planets including Rahu. Paräsara BPHS 34.3-6½ Consider the degrees of the (seven or eight) planets, irrespective of signs. Since Rahu is always retrograde, the longitude of Rahu is considered from the end of the sign. The planet with the highest longitude is the ätm akäraka. Paräsara: BPHS 34.13-15 The planet next (lower) in longitude to the (1) ätmakäraka (AK) is the (2) amätyakäraka (AmK). The other carakäraka in the order (based on lesser longitude) are the (3) bhratåkäraka (BK), (4) mätåkäraka (MK), (5) pitåkäraka (PiK), (6) putrakäraka (PK), (7) jïatikäraka (GK) and (8) därakäraka (DK). Paräsara: BPHS 34.16½ In the opinion of others or in another view point (anye) the putrakäraka (PK) is merged into the mätåkäraka (MK) i.e. there are only seven carakäraka where the putrakäraka (PK) is explicitly excluded. The seven carakäraka are (1) ätmakäraka (AK) (2) amätyakäraka (AmK), (3) bhratåkäraka (BK), (4) mätåkäraka (MK), (5) pitåkäraka (PiK), (6) jïatikäraka (GK) and (7) därakäraka (DK). Here also, Mahaåñi Jaimini has an exactly similar opinion8 where he explicitly mentions that the putrakäraka (PK) is merged into the mätåkäraka (MK). Mahadev's Jaataka Tatwa also mentions the 8 Karaks. I do not think the 7 or 8 are in use because of the popularity of discussions. :> Both are discussed, along with other principles of Jyotish, because the Maharishis wrote of them. Hope that some of this helps. May we continue to be guided by the Gurus and I be corrected where needed. Best wishes, and happy researching, Nitin. || Namah Shivaaya || ================== Hare Rama Krishna Dear Nitin I implied to mean both karaka method works on the basis of both being popular and visible results from our discussion in SJC and Sh Rao's popularity in astro circle. However, this is what i understand from B V Raman's Jaimini Sutras, correct me if am wrong. We usually go to 8 karaka method only if there is a tie in 7 karaka method in 2 planets than we introduce rahu to take the subsequent position, also he uses Naisargik Karakas for solving the tie. Parasara plainly states 7 planets whereas Jaimini states 8 planets and rahu comes in picture in event of tie, however we in SJC are following 8 planets and dont use rahu only on tie. Hence i have my share of doubts but thats my limited knowledge. I am sure learned members of SJC has better answer, Praveenji plz give us view of Sh Raoji.
