Dear Poolat, and list members, Namaskaar,

Without the calculation of the Rashi, the Subdivisionlas cannot be

calculated. The subdivisionals such as the Navamsa (D9) and Dasamsa

(D10) stem from the Rashi.

The Lagna (or rising sign) is the sign on the East at the time of

birth, and is a part of the Rashi.

Here is an attempt to explain the mathematics to you.

The Nav-amsa is the 9th division of the Rashi. When we map 30 degrees

by 9, we get 3Deg 20 Min.

Another Representation:

==================================

Division Degrees Progression

1 0 Deg 0 Min – 3 Deg 20Min 0

2 3 Deg 20 Min – 6 Deg 40Min 1

3 6 Deg 40Min – 10 Deg 0 Min 2

4 10 Deg 00Min – 13 Deg 20 Min 3

5 13 Deg 20 Min – 16 Deg 40 Min 4

6 16 Deg 40 Min – 20 Deg 0 Min 5

7 20 Deg 0 Min – 23 Deg 20 Min 6

8 23 Deg 20 Min – 26 Deg 40 Min 7

9 26 Deg 40 Min – 30 Deg 0 Min 8

1) Find the degree of the Rashi or planet in question.

2) Determine whether the above is in a Movable, Fixed or Dual Sign.

3) If Movable, begin counting from the sign itself, if Fixed, begin

counting from the 9th therefrom, if Dual, begin counting form the 5th

therefrom.

4) Examine where the progression of the above map into, and add

accordingly to get the Navamsa position.

Example:

1) Lagna 14 Deg Pisces 04Min.

2) Pisces is a Dual Sign.

3) Counting begins from 5th therefrom – i.e. CANCER.

4) Degrees have progressed 4 more – i.e. Count 4 more positions from

Cancer.

Final Navamsa position is Scorpio.

Example:

1) Mercury is in 13 Deg Leo 23 Min.

2) Mercury is in a Fixed Sign.

3) Counting begins 9th therefrom – i.e. Aries

4) Degrees have progressed 6 more – i.e. Count 4 more positions from

Aries.

Final Navamsa of Mercury is Leo.

Example:

1) Sun is in 21 Deg Cancer 04 Min.

2) The Sun is in a Movable sign.

3) Counting begins from the sign itself – i.e. Cancer.

4) Degrees have progressed 6 more – i.e. Count 6 more positions from

Cancer.

Final Navamsa position of the Sun is Capricorn.

You can practice more on the chart below, or any other.

Characteristics:

Scorpio is the sign of death, amongst others. The person with this

Navamsa is inherently interested in the Occult, including Jyotish.

Maharishi Jaimini (Upadesa Sutras) has described more about the

Navamsa Lagna and Kaarakamsa.

Hope some of this helps. May the Gurus continue to guide us and

correct me where wrong.

Best wishes and warm regards,

Nitin.
