Allow me to share some of my understanding…

 

If you have Saggitarius rising, then the 12th therefrom, is Scorpio –

not Aries.

 

 

Mahadashas (per Vimshottari) are for a significant period of time.

Look more into the Antars and Pratyantars as well.

 

I have been using the Sun / Moon / Lagna principle.

 

Check where the Maha Dasha planet is from the Sun.

Check where the Antar Dasha planet is from the Moon.

Check where the Pratyantary Dasha planet is from the Lagna.

 

Accordingly, gauge into the person's awareness of the physical self,

the mind, and the soul depending on what you wish to gauge into.

 

An entire picture of the chart(s) also help.

with ARIES,

Chart has Sagitarrius acendant. Rah and Ven in 3rd house with Cancer.
