Guest guest
Dear Sunil, In ancient times the only ephemeris used were the Panchangas. They had Lanka Longitude (It runs through Ujjain, Avanti etc.) as the reference point. So the correction for Local time was based on that parameter. Now a days ephemeris use Greenwich as the reference point and calculations are made accordingly. There would be no difference in the final chart drawn, barring that caused by use of different Ayanamsha. Chandrashekhar. My confusion was that i had just received the information that in olden times the zero longitude was reckoned from UJJAIN (for westerners it is in india) and now it is Greenwich. So i was thinking if their is something missing that i dont know of (which Anantji has illuminated me now) otherwise i was thinking that the co-ordinates of Madras etc in olden times and now would be different thereby giving us different birth charts if we took a chart of native born in madras now and compared it to same in olden times. Anantji pointed out nicely that it is taken care of now. Thanks for ur mail best SJ Sarajit Poddar <sarajit (AT) (DOT) org> wrote: || Jaya Jagannath || Dear Sunil, The longitude and latitude is just dividing the surface of earth into coordinates so that a place can be reckoned. Longitude is required for finding the exact time at that location or rather the LMT on the basis of which all calculations are performed and hence even though it is arbitrary, it is useful. The latitude controls the season as the Sun goes uttarayana and daskshinayana and is more astronomically important than the longitude. Thus it does not matter where the longitudes were, the latitudes would have been the same. Btw no questions are foolish. Guest guest
Dear Sunil, I think your question is about the latitudes and longitudes of the places. In ancient times the latitude/longitudes were known in terms of Palabha. The meaning of Pala is Shanku and Bha means shadow. You must have heard about sundials. You can convert present latitudes to Palabhas. the Formula for it is as follows : Palabha = 12 x Tan(latitude) Say the latitude of Delhi is 28N38 then Palabha = 12 x Tan (28deg38min) = 12 x o.545972655 = 6Angula 33 Vynagula 6.02Prativyangula Then the calculation of Charkhand palas is calculated and from it the swodaya sadhan is done. This system is now outdated as we are using the siderial time for all lagna calculations. I think this will help you. Palbha: when the saayana Sun is in the sign of Aries etc (i.e., during the time of equinox, when the day and the night is equal), the 12 Angul (fingers) shadow of Shankhu (a small stick used for this purpose) at midday is called Palbha. That Palbha is placed at three places and is multiplied respectively by 10, 8 and 10/3, and then three charkhanda are obtained. 10.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:navy"> 10.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:navy">As Dewavratji mentions, the Palbha can be found from multiplying Tangent of the Latitude with 12. Guest guest
Amazing is your post and knowledge. This is way above my understanding and hence i would need to re-read this many times. One small doubt re Even though this method is obsolete, you can find here that the duration rising of a sign is not 2 hours for each sign as we normally take, but they vary with sign to sign. There are shorter and longer ascension signs. The difference increases the more we go towards the poles. I was under the impression that we all are aware that a sign need not be 2 hrs in duration and changes from season to season, is this correct (even if we are not going towards the poles, lets take eg india) Dear Srivastavaji, Thanks for your detailed post, I am storing those emails. best wishes SJ Express yourself with Y!
