I will respond with my limited knowledge. But I expect the learned to correct me if I go wrong.

Dear Learned Members,

Can anyone be kind enough to guide me as to how to keep Satyanarayana Vrath. I

do not know much about it except what I found on the net and no site gives

details on how to keep the Vrath. Pls find some queries below, a detailed

answer would be most appreciated.

Obliged

Lord Satyanarayana is another form of Lord Vishnu who is commonly worshipped by

Hindus in their homes along with family and friends.

The worship is performed usually on a full moon (purnima) day of the month.

People worship by reciting the gracious story of the Lord which was once told

by Lord Vishnu himself to the sage Narada for the benefit of humankind.

The Lords grace is described in a Hindu book called Skanda Purana. He has four

hands like Lord Vishnu, however, his fourth hand does not hold a lotus rather

it is extended upward to bless people

Queries

1. I presume this Vrath is to be kept on Full Moon Day of every month. Any

particular month to start this or one can start from any coming Full Moon day

Answer. On any Full Moon,Ekadasi or when the Sun is transiting from one house to another

2. What are the rituals that one should perform

Answer. Not many actually, but at the same time, not so few that I can list them

out here. The best thing to do is to buy a cassette/CD available in the market.

I donno what language you would prefer. But I know for sure the CDs are

available in few languages. I am telugu speaking so found a Telugu CD and I use

that one.

3. Can one hear a tape of the Satyanarayana Katha

Answer. Yes. You can hear the tape and perform the pooja, or just listen to the

stories in the tape and take the prasad(offerring to God).

4. I presume since the word Vrath is mentioned then one should abstain from food

and water for the whole day sunrise to sunset. Kindly clarify

Answer. I don't think you have to abstain from water. But it would be good if

you can abstain from food during the day and perform the pooja in the evening.

5. What are the astrological combinations for which a native is compulsorily

adviced to keep this Vrath and for what benefit.

Answer. Anyone can perform this Vrath irrespective of caste, creed or sex. It is

advisable for people with Moon with the nodes to perform this Vrath to pacify

the ill effects of the nodes on the Moon. I think you find more details in

Sanjay Ji's website

6. Any restrictions of caste, creed for Satyanarayana Vrath (I ask this since I

presume only Brahmins are supposed to recite Gayatri Mantra , I have heard this

and I can be wrong)

Answer. Same as for Question 5

Shall be obliged

Best wishes to all

AUM GURUBYO NAMAH

Dear Sunil,

Pournimasya thithi is ruled by Sani. When the Moon is full/mind is fully is

matured vairagya/determination takes control. Moon-Sani combination is

extremely favourable for truth seekers.

Vratha means allowing the lord to manifest. This means the question as to what

'I" should do does not arise in this context. The intention is not to allow the

atmakaraka/ahankara to do something and expect something in return. Vratha does

not give room for ahankara to exist. This means that the baktha is totally

filled with the grace of lord. When the baktha is totally filled by devotion

to lord there can be no space for anything else. This is what people call as

fasting/abstaining from food.

All that is allowed to enter the system is called as 'ahaara'/food. In this

context abstaining from food and allowing the mind to feast itself in any

worldly attractions will not come under vratha.

How can one fill up oneself with the devotion to the lord? How can one develop

bakthi? The one simple way is to listen to the lilas/glories/stories of lord.

By regularly hearing the stories of the Lord one automatically develops

devotion within.

Listen to the story of lord. The ears(3rd house) which are otherwise attuned to

kama if cleansed( by the buds of vairaghya - sani is responsible for expulsion

of waste) allows the story of lord to flow within. Any change in 3rd house has

definite repercussion on 7th and 11th houses. Love and desire towards

God-Communion will automatically manifest.

Best wishes.

Happy to be yours,
