Guest guest
Hi, I have been reading various books and I am unable to move beyond the benefic/malefic analysis of planets. I am on the verge of giving up astrology because of its vagueness. This is probably my final attempt at this question: When we analyse a planet 's benefic and malefic nature what are the factors to look at? In one book it says that Functional nature is the final thing. So if taurus is 8 th and 11th lord of taurus lagana then it is a malefic. Another book ( B.V Raman's 300 important combination) says that the analys is based on functional nautre, whether it is placed in a friendly house, if it has benefic aspects etc. So we give +1 point for functional benefic and -1 for FM. We give +1 if planet is exalted or in friendly house and -1 if deblitated or enemy house etc. We add all these numbers and the +ve or -ve result at the end is the final decider of benefic/melefic nature. Another book ( By Rayudu) has more factors to consider. If a planet is exalted it gets +3 ( Raman gave it +1 ), if a planet is vargottama it gets +3. If a benefic is placed in 6th,8th,12th it gets -2 etc etc. The more I read the more I get confused. So my question to this forum is: PLease Please tell me how to analyse the true malefic/benefic nature of a planet in a chart. Or I might just give up the study of astrology as a subject that has too much vagueness and too little science. kanwar
Guest guest
Dear Kanwar, Astrology learning is a difficult process, but one can learn with perseverance. You have to understand that it is not possible to reduce assessment of nature of planets to a set mathematical formula. If you try to fathom the meaning behind the written words, you will have better success. Understand that planets have some innate nature which is referred to as the Natural beneficence/Malfeasance. Again planets behave in particular way due to their relation with the Ascendant, by reason of their house ownership, which is referred to as the functional nature of the planet. The results are combination of the two factors. Here one has to use one's sense of proportion to arrive at the correct interpretation. This is achieved by working on numerous charts and is a lengthy process no doubt. The time taken to learn astrology depends on one's own chart too. Mastering it is something that depends on the goal one has set for himself. Some like me think that they are still at the stage of a student after more than 40 years of studying it, and have understood only a tiny bit of all the vast knowledge that makes up Astrology as a whole. Remember that Astrology consists of three Pillars, Ganita, Samhita and Hora and true Triskanda Jyotishis are a rarity.
