Usually a skilled astrologer suggest a mantra to the native only when the fifth house or its lord is having enough dignity. Or else the Gem can do the job. When an astrologer suggest a Gem every Gem is to be mounted in a particular metal. For example, Yellow Sapphire in Gold and Emerald in Silver. Also there are particular days is to be selected and Puja should be done for the GEM and some mantras to be chanted. So these are the rituals associated with the Gem, but usually people urge to buy the Gem and wear without doing rituals as said earlier. Furthermore, the Gem after wearing should be kept in salt water on Amavashya day and in the next day the Gem must be washed with milk and water before wearing. 2. Rahu and Ketu are benefic only when aspected by the benefics, lord of the first, fifth or nineth houses. 3. Usually for using Gem is not really necessary and furthermore, real Ruby is not an affordable and not easy to get in a cheaper rate. Doing Surya namaskara and seeing the raising Sun itself can be a remedy. TO be very perfect doing puja or worshipping Lord Shiva can rectify the ill effects due to Sun. Eg., Lord Rama prayed Shiva along with Sun by getting the Aditya Huruthaya from Agasthiya. Suggesting Ruby to a girl is highly objectionable because that gives ill effects. 4.About weak malefic planets one has to see the horoscope to come to the conclusion. So you are saying that gem can be prescibed (regardless of the nature of the planet)as long as the fifth house or its lord has enough dignity. So gems can be prescribed for malefic planets too. Won't the gems further strengthen the maleficence of the planets? 2. and 3. If we recommend gems for Sun (or any other planet including rahu and ketu) won't their natural significance be strenghthen? My question on sun was - if ruby is suggested for benefic sun, won't its natural tendency of "seperativeness" be increased too? 4. When does a weak malefic planet loose its maleficence? When dealing with Gem care should be taken very carefully, after the particular period the Gem must be abandon without fail or else misfortune occurs, the procedure can be to offer the used Gem to put in the temple Daan Patra. Gems alone to my knowledge do not do much if the native is poius to God and the native should be aware all the times that the Gem is not an ornament or a show piece. Gem have cosmic power and hence Ruby is usually unnecessary since we have the Sun light plenty around us, so prayer to Lord Shiva can do well, on extreme conditions it is better to use Ruby but pure (Flawless) Ruby is unaffordable. Usually Ruby is worn in conjunction with other Gems such as Yellow Sapphire or Coral. Better to consult the Gemology books in depth and do so. Well Malefic planets lose their strength only when they are aspected by benefic planets such as Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, ascending Moon, Lord of the first, fifth or ninth house.
