Dear Sunil,

 

I have tried to copy the text from Nimitta file to a notepad

/ word, but could not copy and paste it. While it is pasting

to the notepad I am getting some special characters.

 

My be I will try on my boys laptop's in the evening and let

you know. Sorry, I could not be of help this time. Does any

has any idea why I can not copy and paste from pdf to notepad

for Sunil.

Introduction

The soothsayers of Rome and the Jyotiña of India have used omens extensively for

foretelling the future. Serious examination of a chart cannot commence without

keeping a record of the omens that the astrologer encountered during the

journey for the reading or during the period of the reading/prior to it. These

have been explicitly spelt out in Praçna Märga (Añöamaëgalam).

Signs, sounds and other omens observed at the moment of the commencement of a

journey foretell the outcome of the journey. If the observations are ominous

and portend evil, then the remedy of eleven Måtyunjaya mantras (präëäyama) has

been advised. If the ominous indications persist for the second time, then more

mantras (präëäyama) are advised and if these indications persist for a third

time, then even more mantras (präëäyama) have to be done. If even after this

negative indication are observed, then the journey should be forsaken.

What are these indications? How does one decipher these messages of nature that

can forebode both ominous happenings as well as joyous events? Is the matter

serious enough meriting remedial measures? These are some of the questions we

shall examine. The two words to be examined are ‘nimitta’ and ‘çakuna’

nimitta sign , omen Mn. Yajn. MBh. &c. (cf. {dur-n-}) cause , motive

, ground , reason Up. Kap. Var. Mn. MBh. Kav. &c. (in all oblique cases =

because of , on account of cf. Pa1n2. 2-3 , 23 Pat. ; mfn. ifc. caused or

occasioned by ; {-ttaMyA} , to be the cause of anything Ka1d.);

~käraëan. instrumental or efficient cause (esp. the Deity as the agent in creation) W;

~käla m. the period or moment of time which may be regarded as causing any event;

~jïäna n. `"knowledge of omens or signs"' , N. of ch. of the Käma-sütra by Vätsyäyana

~vid. m. `" omen-knower "' , an astrologer L.

çakuna n. any auspicious object or lucky omen , an omen or prognostic (in

general ; rarely `" an inauspicious omen "') Ka1v. Katha1s. Pan5cat. mfn.

indicating good luck , auspicious MW.

~jïa mfn. knowing omens Katha1s. ({A}) f. a small house-lizard L.

~jïäna n. knowledge of birds or omens , augury Yäjïa.

~devata f. a deity presiding over good omens Kathäs.

~dvära n. `" door of omens "' , a partic. term in augury Varähamihira Båhat Saàhita.

~çästra n. ii. `" doctrine or book of omens "' , N. of wk.

 

1.1 Scope of Çakuna çästra

The scope of this subject is very vast and considerable information is available

in Jyotiña classics on this subject. Åñi Atri taught the subject to Garga Muni

and even Varähamihira (Båhat Saàhita) has written extensively on it. The

subject matter can be broadly divided into three categories which include

observation of (A) the querist and omens (B) natural phenomena and © men &

animals. This list is not comprehensive but does cover a large portion of the

scope of Çakuna çästra & Nimitta.

1. Observation of the querist and omens (during a chart reading or horary

astrology practice),

· Breath examination

· Touch analysis

· Observation of querist

· Lakñaëa (l][)

· Tatkälika lakñaëa (tTkailk l][)

2. Observation of natural phenomena

· Utpäta (%Tpat): Portentous phenomena including terrestrial or bhu

(ÉU), atmospheric or bhuva (Éuv) and heavenly or sva (Sv).

· Garbha lakñaëa (gÉRl][): Pregnancy of clouds

· Kusumalata lakñaëa (k…sumlt l][): Prognostication from flowers

· Sandhya lakñaëa (sNXy l][): Indications of sandhya (sunrise/sunset)

· Digdäha lakñaëa (idGdah l][): Fiery glow at horizon

· Bhükampa lakñaëa (ÉUkMp l][): Indications of earthquake

· Ulkälakñaëa (%Lkal][): Prognostication from meteors

· Pariveñalakñaëa (pirve;l][): Prognostication from halos, ketus etc.

· Indräyudhalakñaëa (#NÔayuxl][): Prognostication from rainbows

· Gandharvanagaralakñaëa (gNxvRngrl][): Prognostication from aerial

cities (cloud formations)

· Pratisüryalakñaëa (àitsUyRl][): Prognostication from other illuminous

bodies

· rajolakñaëa (rjael][): Indications of haze

· nirghätalakñaëa (in"aRtl][): Indications of hurricanes

· paööalakñaëa (p”l][): Indications of crowns

· khaògalakñaëa (ofœgl][): Indications of swords/weapons

· präsädalakñaëa (àasadl][): Indications of temples/buildings

3. Observation of men & animals

· Jyeñöhépatana (JyeóIptn): lit. ‘fall of the chameleon’ or pallipatana

(pi‘ptn) (lit. fall of the house lizard)

· Aìga spandana (A¼ SpNdn): lit. ‘throbbing of limbs/body parts

· Aìgalakñaëa (A¼l][): Indications of the body parts

· Piöakalakñaëa (ipqkl][): Indications of pimples/boils

· Khaïjanakalakñaëa (oÃnkl][): Prognostication from Wagtail (birds)

This weekend we are going to examine some of the methods of prognostication

based on observation of the querist (which is very essential for chart reading)

and observation of men and animals (which is considered vital for deciphering

the messages of nature/gods).

Recently Sanjayji uploaded a file on Nimitta, could some member on this list be

kind enough to send it as a text body complete message on the list.

 

>From the last 2 weeks i have been telling many that it is not possible for me to

access site and yesterday it came in the papers that Indian Govt has

blocked - all groups through ISPs.
