Guest guest
Dear Learned members, Kalnirnay Almanac says 15th is Makar Sankranti, I have a few basic doubts on it which might sound foolish to many but if possible pls answer. 1. what is the meaning of Sankrant 2. Is this festival called Makar Sankranti due to Suns transit into Capricorn, incidentally even right now Sun is in SAgi and a previous post also mentioned that learned pundits are fighting in it. wehther it is today or tom. a post by astroved.com said that from 13th to 15th is the journey and hence re as Makar Sankrant - something like that. 3. Why is this such an auspicious day and does Sun become powerful in this period 4. If so, how come Sun becomes powerful or his journey is celebrated when he is passing through a sign owned by his enemy Saturn. any errors kindly point out. best wishes, Sunil John Mumbai Just another manic Monday? 14 nights in Jamaica from £299. Usually when Sun changes a sign then it's called sankranti. When it goes from say Pisces/Meena to Aries/Mesha it can be called Aries/Mesha Sankranti. This marks the beginning of solar new year. When it goes to say from Aries/Mesha to taurus/rishaba it's called rishaba sankranti. When it goes from Saggitarius/Dhanur to Capricorn/Makar it's called Makar Sankranti. This marks the begining of Uttarayana/Nothern- course. When Sun, the over lord of zodiac, gains strength. > 2. Due to misconceptions about the Ayanamsha(The shifting zodiac) there are many Ayanamsha correction values speculated by the learned. The degree of planet depends on the ayanamsha adopted. So depending ayanasha adopted by the panchanga writer the sankranti dates can change. The most adopted one is Chitrapaksha Ayanamsha. This is also called Lahiri Ayanamasha named after the committee which recomended/adopted this standard for the Government of India. > 3. Why is this such an auspicious day and does Sun become powerful in this period >From Capricorn to Gemini it's called the uttarayana/northern-course of the Sun. Sun, the Overlord of the 12 signs, becomes very powerful. Hence the importance for the Makara/Capricorn Sankranti. The northern transit is very auspcious and favours deva's the demi-gods. > 4. Guest guest
Dear Sunil, I just wanted to add a few more input on Sanjayji's answers. I'm a novice too, so I call upon the Gurus to correct me wherever I might have gone wrong. First, Surya's Mahima is profound in the Vedas, that we all know well. Also, we've all read the introduction of Jyothish as Sun being the King of the navagrahas (and thus whatever he does, affects all). Now, focusing on Makara Sankranti.. Makara is the 10th house of the kalachakra (zodiac personified). 10th house is the strongest kendra, and Sun, one of the karakas of the 10th house (along with Mercury & Saturn), who gets Dik bala (DIRECTIONAL strength) in the 10th house also termed as Rajya=kingdom (Northern Direction), entering the 10th house, also the house of Saturn (another karaka for 10th) is definitely a GRAND ENTRANCE. So, much focus is on the 10th bhava probably emphasizing ->work like Sun, showing light to the world, karma without phala-asha..etc Of course, as pointed out by Sanjayji, Capricorn (Makara) is the beginning of Uttara-Ayana, the (apparent) northern movement of Sun along the zodiac (ecliptic) as viewed from Earth. Sun gets dik bala (directional strength) in the 10th house (the Northernmost point in a chart),so Makara is quite special for him as he gets ready to travel North. Also, Makara Sankranti, is well-known to Hindus as the day, awaited by Ganga-Putra Bhisma Pitamaha to leave his body & go to the heavenly abode. He had been waiting, lying on the bed of arrows (Dhanus=saggitarius=centaur with arrow facing up), for this special day, to leave his body. So maybe it signifies the penance(saadhana) done (signified by Dhanus-9th house of zodiac) & entering Makara the 10th house (also termed as Swarga=heaven). The 2 houses significant to Sun are Mesha (Aries, where it exalts=gives full results) & Makara (where it's entrance is considered so auspicious), apart from Simha, its Moola-Trikona. Note that from Mesha & Makara both, the 12th house is ruled by Jupiter, the auspicious one. Also, Makara is a moveable sign, so the 1st navamsa (9th division) is vargottama, which makes the Sun more stronger as it enters Makara. And Sun gives lots of its results in the 1st 5 degrees. These are just my observations as I meditate upon & please apply them with care. Guest guest
Hare Rama Krsna! On top of that, Makara Sankranti is the winter solstice, thus conquering over darkness and the days becoming longer again. At least when ayanamsa was in 0°Aries as spring equinox. I just realized from a description in Srimad-Bhagavatam that Kali-yuga started when winter solstice entered into Makara, the Kali-yuga sign, from Aquarius then. That means spring equinox was in 0°Taurus at that time. According to Chitrapaksa ayanamsa exactly at the autumn equinox of -1890.
