Dear 'Indigenous',

Interesting question- I was thinking about that too..

The most common opinion is that the hair is sexual symbol. One way or another

most people see 'long hair' or mustache for man, as 'attractive'/and

attractiveness is definitively not 'asexual'/

Monks in monasteries have their heads shaved- no 'worldly desires, among which

again, celibacy has the leading status.

Gods, rishis' etc. are proven to be spiritual, above 'low sinful nature of

mortals, andd therefore there is no harm in returning them their

'attractiveness, on the contrary-

they must have some appeal for their followers /unconsciously?/ and since their

rejection of worldly things, devotion to faith, spirituality, is beyond any

doubt, they are allowed to have that 'appeal' without prefix of sexuality

/unlike other mortals, lower grade monks, who must have a reminder that they

are 'prone to sin of touch and sex, until they 'mature' on spiritual path..

This the base level understanding, because of numerous variations- monotheism

says Jesus was born from Virgin- to avoid sinful 'mediator'.

In polytheism, gods can be lustful, sinful, as we've seen in myth.

I've learnt from Jyotish that Saturn rules hair- strong Saturn, nice thick lots

of hair..The stronger the Sun the less hair one will have- being owner of long

thick hair, I wish I had less- and stronger Sun in my horoscope. Having hair is

nevertheless desirable, considered beautiful- I suspect that might be because

Saturn and Venus are really very good friends, and Sa is exalted in Li-

These are just my thoughts..And I seem to get this confirmed in everyday life- strong Sa-hair

Hope to hear other's opinion,

their heads shaved. On the other hand, there are those, that have head half

shaved off, and the rest of the hair grows, this is visible among the shaolin

monks, and even in India we have the concept of "Shikha". All the gods, on the

to think, that hair is like a connection with the physical world. The roots of

the hair go into the spiritual realm, and shaving ones head indicates our

devotion to God and that we have given up the material

world. But that is obviously wrong since all the Rishis are depicted with thick

Dear Anna

from biology i have read that hair and nails are basically dead

cells, so ketu could be the significator of the same.

Some nadi granthas also say that Ketu is significator of hair.

Dear Partha,

Saturn must be the significator of hair else why would Sun in 1st

house generally make a person bald?

Nails are an outgrowth of the skin and shouldnt it be associated

Mercury?

Sanjay mentioned that the matted locks of Lord Shiva represent the

stored up energy gained from medidation. And the Ganga water issues

from his head so as to dissipate the intense heat therein. The

Brahmins of yesteryears used to shave all the hair on the head

except for a singular tuft near the Sahasrara chakra.

The Rishis had long hair/beards because they were detached from all

the five senses and therefore didnt care for their appearance.

Nothing fancy about it. As for Samson and other wannabe Samsons, it

may have been the opposite (vanity)!

Hari

Dear OnlyHari,

I guess partha is right here.

To the best of my memory , as I can remember it, once

Pt.Rath himself wrote on Ketu and Hair.

He also suggested that since rishis had strong ketu

that indicating as spirituality, long life compare to

now and long hair.

His mail can be searched in the archive.

Gurus can clarify more on it.

Regards

Parag

Hi, I wondered about this before too. You might want to ask a face

reader too because what I read from some books was that baldness is

associated with having strong sexual desires. It made me think

because I wondered why monks shave their heads...?...and for them

why is it a preference...?...and then why like the rest of people

here mentioned, why is the sun indicating baldness...?...I just

wondered how that all fits together :) well, if you go on google and

type 'why do monks shave their heads' you'll get some answers about

the monks, or if you can ask someone personally that would be even

better. well, i'm a female, so it's more common to have long hair

and I highly doubt I will going bald anytime soon, but I have a

preference for keeping my hair long and my sun is debilitated and I

guess the saturn is strong in my chart. it would probably be a

better study though to hear from men about their hair, since men are

the ones who mostly go bald...but you know, some women even grow

mustaches, I wonder what that's all about? Hmmm....well, take care,

I liked your discussion you started :) Angie

Re: [vedic astrology] Re: Question about Hair

Dear OnlyHari,

I guess partha is right here.

To the best of my memory , as I can remember it, once

Pt.Rath himself wrote on Ketu and Hair.

He also suggested that since rishis had strong ketu

that indicating as spirituality, long life compare to

now and long hair.

His mail can be searched in the archive.

Gurus can clarify more on it.

Regards

Parag

OM NAMASIVAYA

Namaste.

Dear Partha,

Position of Upakethu is related to hair loss. That was in one of the old

Malayalam text book on Parasara hora.

I hope pundits may be able recall it.

Hello all,

I guess Mars has something to say about hair among other planets.

Shaving head surely relates to Saturn.

Dear all !

The Sun is a hot planet and because of this reason, whosoever has Sun in Lagna

has the tendency of having the concentration of heat in head which seriously

affect the hairs. The hairs tend to be grey early and there are chances of

partial baldness.

I don't thing, we should involve Lord Shiva for explaining such a petty reason.

However, Lord Shiva is very hot in temprament and that is why he is embodiment

of destruction. The Sun, the universal Jagadatma, represents Lord Shiva

astrologically.

Thanks,

Dear allYou are not thinking aloud. If sun in lagna makes a person lose his

hair, then why does Sun represent Shiva!!People might think that saturn rules

hair and nails because when we meditate we grow nails and hair!!!i really cant

understand this logic. I will not explain my view point, please think

Hi, something to add is that I remember reading somewhere that it's

important to know that the sun really is not a hot planet, but is

only just light....I know this seems to contradict some

things...like what you have written here and even about combust

planets 'burning up' because of the heat of the sun....but that

point had stuck in my mind, so I'm mentioning it. Angie

Dear friends,

My take on it: Hair is considered attractive. That is why when

people are trying to concentrate their minds on higher objectives,

they shave their hair off. The obvious example in present day India

is with the priests, who shave their heads except for the tuft of

hair that represents the energy of the divine. (the "aura" or the

energy of the sahasrara chakra). (To go off on a tangent about

the "tuft" .... The same theory is followed with coconuts used in

puja, on the kalasham to represent the Devi, at least in Andhra

Pradesh, I can't speak for the other places, since I don't know....

the fiber is removed from the coconut except for one tuft right on

top.) Another example from ancient India was the shavign of the

heads of the students prior to going to Gurukul. Even today, this is

practiced partially, in the ceremony of Upanayanam, which

traditionally began the student life of a boy in days of old.

Shaving your head and gifting the hair to Lord Venkateswara in

Tirupathi is a well know form of worship / penanace. Again, the

theory is that hair is something highly desirable, so gifting it to

God shows that you would give up even something so desirable for

God.

Rishis are a different story altogether. Sanyasins have always been

above and beyond all rules. We, normal people, feel desires, and

hence should stive to get beyond our desires. Sanyasins have no

desires left, so it is all the same for them. We are like little

kids, still learning to figure out 2+2=4, while the Sanyasins are in

the Advanced Calculus stage, so they don't need any reminders that

2+2=4! If that is true for mortal sanyasins, what can we say about

Lord Shiva who is the Adi Tapaswin? How can He have any desires,

whether or not he has Jatas. Or, for that matter, Lord Vishnu with

his beutiful long curly hair (indeed one of his names is Keshava!)

has no desires either, except to help each and every one of us.

As to which planet for hair - according to Western Astrology, it is

Venus, the giver of all beauty. I know very very little of

astrology, whether western or vedic, and am just a student, so wiser

people in this group are free to correct me!

Hello Parag:

Your note relating to Sanjay's views that Ketu represents hair and

due to strong Ketu, the old Maharishis had long hair may be

INCORRECT.

I have a strong Ketu and I began loosing hair at very young age and

I'm partially bald at 35.

Ya, I do have Sun in the 7th house aspecting the 1st house and it

many have caused my male-pattern-baldness.

petty reason. However, Lord Shiva is very hot in temprament and that

is why he is embodiment of destruction. The Sun, the universal

Jagadatma, represents Lord Shiva astrologically.
