Guest guest
Namaste, Before one comes to the conclusion that Ramadan always comes in Kartika month, I have to clarify one thing. Hindu lunar months are aligned with the solar months by the use adhika masas (extra months). Hindu lunar years are of 355 days or 384 days. Once in a while, you get a 384 day year in which a month repeats twice (i.e. Sun-Moon conjunction occurs in the same sign twice in that year). On the other hand, lunar years of Islam are always of 354-355 days. Thus, the month of Ramadan may come in Kartika now (i.e. starts when Sun and Moon conjoin in Libra), but it will shift slowly. After about 18 years, month of Ramadan will come in Vaisakha masa (i.e. starts when Sun and Moon conjoin in Aries). Hindu lunar calendar is defined in such a way that a particular lunar month always starts with Sun-Moon conjunction in a particular sign. Libra, for example, is the sign of Shiva (7th in natural zodiac). That is not the case with the lunar calendar of Islam. Thus, it is tough to assign astrological significance to it. Guest guest
Dear Members, I agree with Narasimharoa. Technically he is very much right. The month of Ramadhan has no "direct linkage" with solar or luni-solar calendering and even with Jyotish. Instead it is the 9th in number on reckoning from 1st month of Hijra calendar 'Muharram'. The name of 12 months and way of Moon sighting was traditionally in vogue among Arab tribes before Islam. The name Hijra is historically related with the event, when Prophet Muhammad migrated from Mecca to Madina. In Arabi "Hijra" means 'to migrate for the sake of rightiousness'. But the Hijra Calendar was systematically adopted and synthesized from 15 July 622 AD during regime of Umar Farooq-the 2nd caliphate. Today is 1st Ramzan 1424 AH.(After Hijra) The Islamic Calendar is purely lunar and every month starts on the basis Moon sighting (not at the time when Sun and Moon conjoin), therefore 1st of every Hijra month comes either on 2nd or 3rd tithi. As the months started on sighting therefore it is not universally applicable. The 1st Ramadhan in Mid-East was on Monday 27 Oct 2003, but here in sun-continent 1st Ramadhan falls on 28 Oct 2003, because the Moon is sighted today after 12 degree elevation. This is the drawback of Hijra calendar. As far as its relation with Karthika, or any month is absurd, and a spurious guess. But it is fact that, amongst the Muslims of middle ages(800 AD to 1600 AD) the Jafr, Numrology and Ramal reached at their achme, and most of thier forecasting based on Hijra Calendar system. Aparently Hijra Calendar is not coincided with Solar or Lunar, but in long-run they meet. And hence there are lots of methods to find gregorian or julian dates from Hijra and vice-versa, and determing planetary position on the basis of Hijra dates. Ramadhan is assumed the most blessed one, because the revelation of Quran was started during this month. It is the month of fasting (abstaining from every sort of food and drink, from dawn to dusk), charity, meditation, and spiritual evolution. Hope this prove helpful in removing some existing doubts.
