Questions on Lord Krishna

Dear Gentlepeople:

Yesterday I visited a Radha-Krishna temple. While at the temple I

realized that since I was a child, I've heard stories about "leela"

between Radha and Krishna and "leela" between Gopis and Krishna;

however, I've never heard anything about Lord Krishna's wife. I also

realized that I am ignorant on many other things about Lord Krishna,

I'm hoping some learned member may post the answers.

Here are some questions:

1) Who is the legally wedded wife of Lord Krishna?

2) Did Lord Krishna have any progeny? If yes, who are they?

3) Was Lord Krishna a Brahmin or a Shatriya (warrior class)?

4) How did Lord Krishna die?

I remember a story that Lord Krisna died because a hunter (Pardhi)

found an arrow in a jungle and used that arrow to hunt. This arrow

then struck Lord Krishna is his toe and Lord Krishna died because

his "atma" resided in his toe.

Is this an accurate story? If yes, why did Lord Krishna, the creator

of the universe and the orator of the Hindu way of life die at the

hands of an ordinary hunter? Was Lord Krishna born with some karmic

deficiencies that led to a voilent death at the hands of a hunter?

Why didn't Lord Krishna die at a holy place like Haridwar or Nepal or

some sacred place in the Himalayas?

Also, why didn't Lord Krishna get a glorious death like Bhisma

Pitamah or like Yudhisthir who ascended to heaven.

If the story I noted above is incorrect, then how did Lord Krishna

die?

Dear Gentlepeople, I ask this with utmost respect for Lord Krishna

and I ask this only to educate myself. In fact, it is embarassing

that I'm Hindu and a Brahmin YET I don't know these facts related to

Lord Krishna.

Thank you.

Mukund

Dear Mukund Namste

If you allow me to share my little knowledge on this topic, here is

what I know about Krishna

1)Who is the legally wedded wife of Lord Krishna?

I think there were 8 of them.SatyaBhabha was is favorite and was

daughter of Satrjit. With Rukmini he had a Gandharva Vivaha. Rukmini

was the daughter of Bhishmaka, king of Vidarbha. Jambavati was

another and daughter of the bear king Jambavan. Kalindi,Yamuna

personified,Mitravrinda, the sister of the kings of

Avantipura,Nagnajiti or Satya, the daughter of the king of

Kosala,Bhadra, the daughter of Krishna's aunt,Laksmana, the daughter

of the king of some province( not able to recollect name) were other

wives of Krishna. Many say that Rukmini was his favorite as well.

Rukmini was incarnation of Laxmi. Specially,Jagganath puri yatra is

of Krishna-Rukmini yatra. After the Narakasura Vadha,Krishna got

married with 16000 women who were freed by Krishna. So there were

16008 wives to Krishna. Many say from all of them he had 10 sons

from each. Many say only from first 8 he had ten sons from each. I

am not sure about it.

2) Did Lord Krishna have any progeny? If yes, who are they?

I am not able to recollect all names but I know that Aniruddha was

Krishna Grand-Son and son of Pradyumna. Pradyumna was son of Krishna-

RUkmini. He was re-incarnation of Kama. Pradyumna was abducted by a

demon by name Sambara immediately when he was born to Rukmini. He

was held captive by the demon till he attained adolescence and after

attaining the age of 16 years, Pradyumna killed the demon and came

back to his parents. Another son which I recollect is son of

Kriahna-Jambavati. His name was Samba. He abducted Lakshamana

daughter of Duryodhana and married with her. He was responsible for

end of Yaduvansha.

3)Was Lord Krishna a Brahmin or a Shatriya (warrior class)?

He was son of Vasudev and Devaki from ChandraVansha. He belonged to

Kshtriya class. More popularly he was reffered as Yadav Kula which

many at that time thought that not pure Kshtriya class.

4)How did Lord Krishna die?

and

5) why did Lord Krishna, the creator of the universe and the orator

of the Hindu way of life die at the hands of an ordinary hunter?

The story you have given is correct. Regarding the answer to 5th

question, the answer lies in the fact that Gandhari (Mother of

Kauravas) at the end of war held Krishna responsible for the

destruction of Kuru Vansha. She then cursed Krishna that after

exactly 36 years from now Kriahna vansha/Kula will also see same

death. They will fight among each other(like Kauravas) and will

destroy each other. Moreover, Krishna will wander in the Jungle like

a ordinary person and will be killed by a Vyadha(hunter) like a

ordinary person.

Hearing this Krishna said "It will happen like this".

As I told you,the Samba,son of Kriahna-Jambavati,was responsible for

end of Yadu vansha. The story goes like this,Yadavs tried to play

trick with Rishi Durvasa by dresing Samba as pregnant woman and

asked Durvasa for possible progeny of Samba. He cursed Samba that he

will deliver a Iron piller and because of that only whole Yadu

purush will die. That is how all died from Yadukula. Krishna

received a death like a commoner because of Gandhari Shapa and

moreover Krishna accepted that.

This is what I could recollect offhand about krishna. I hope this

will help you. For many real embarssment comes after they 'study'

Hinduism. Just a word of caution! if by any chance you intend to

learn Hindu scriptures.

Thanks a lot for your Time and Space.

Dear AmolMAndar and Mukund,

I would like to add the following to the Point 5:-

" I remember a story that Lord Krisna died because a

hunter (Pardhi) found an arrow in a jungle and used that

arrow to hunt. This arrow then struck Lord Krishna is his toe

and Lord Krishna died because his "atma" resided in his toe."

I think, the Hunter was "Vali" in his previous incarnation,

the monkey King who was killed by Lord Rama, isn't it?

Hello Amol:

Thank you for the comprehensive response, this really clears some of

the questions I had earlier related to Lord Krishna.

However, your answer related to Krishna's death begets one more

question. Here it goes:

If Lord Krishna died a violent and unworthy death in jugle due to the

curse of Gandhari, then does the curse of a non-righteous person

affect the native?

We all know that Krishna was on the side of the righteous and

Gandhari despite knowing and acknowledging that her sons were figting

a non-righteous batttle, cursed Krishna. Why would a curse of a non-

righteous person frutify?

Does this mean that anyone and everyone who is jealous of us or whom

we're pissing off in some way can curse us and we'd have to bear the

fruits of this curse?

Lord Krishna's death still doesn't make any sense to me. Even Ravan

who was a sinner was blessed with a royal death at the hands of the

Ram (God himself), then why was Lord Krihna the creator of the

Universe and the "all knowingall encompassing" entiity get such a

low death just due to one curse of woman who was on the side of non-

righteous.

Thank you

Mukund

In Vrindavana-leela, Lord Krishna had no wives. In Dwaraka-leela Krishna

married 16108 queens, the main of whom was Rukmini-devi.

> 2) Did Lord Krishna have any progeny? If yes, who are they?

Each of His 16108 wives gave birth to 10 children, and each of his children

had 10 shildren also. Aniruddha is one His famous sons.

> 3) Was Lord Krishna a Brahmin or a Shatriya (warrior class)?

He appears in every Varna in fdifferent incarnations. In Vrindavana-leela He

was a member of the Vaishya community, as He was the son of Nanda Maharaja

and Yasoda-devi. In Dwaraka he was a Kshatriya, as He was the son of

Vasudeva and Devaki. In Rama-leela again He was a kshatriya, and when He

appeared as Vamanadeva and Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, He was a brahmana.

Lord Krishna returned to His spiritual abode, Goloka Vrindavana at the age

of 125. This pastime is described in detail in the XIth Skandha of the

Bhagavata Purana. The incident with the hunter was enacted just to bewilder

the atheists. It is common sense that no human being will die if his toe is

hit by an arrow. And definitely the Supreme Personality fo Godhead will not

be harmed. However He left back an illusory body, just to bewilder the

atheists, who think that Lord Krishna is also a mere mortal.

Well, if you visit the nearest ISKCON temple, you can purchase all of Srila

Prabhupada's books, and you can educate yourself about these questions. Or

you may go to the web and read it at www.srimbadbhagavatam.org.

[vedic astrology] Re: Questions on Lord KrishnaDear Mukund NamsteIf you allow

me to share my little knowledge on this topic, here is what I know about

Krishna1)Who is the legally wedded wife of Lord Krishna?I think there were 8 of

them.SatyaBhabha was is favorite and was daughter of Satrjit. With Rukmini he had

a Gandharva Vivaha. Rukmini was the daughter of Bhishmaka, king of Vidarbha.

Jambavati was another and daughter of the bear king Jambavan. Kalindi,Yamuna

personified,Mitravrinda, the sister of the kings ofAvantipura,Nagnajiti or

Satya, the daughter of the king of Kosala,Bhadra, the daughter of Krishna's

aunt,Laksmana, the daughter of the king of some province( not able to recollect

name) were other wives of Krishna. Many say that Rukmini was his favorite as

well. Rukmini was incarnation of Laxmi. Specially,Jagganath puri yatra is of

Krishna-Rukmini yatra. After the Narakasura Vadha,Krishna got married with

16000 women who were freed by Krishna. So there were 16008 wives to Krishna.

Many say from all of them he had 10 sons from each. Many say only from first 8

he had ten sons from each. I am not sure about it.2) Did Lord Krishna have any

progeny? If yes, who are they?I am not able to recollect all names but I know

that Aniruddha was Krishna Grand-Son and son of Pradyumna. Pradyumna was son of

Krishna-RUkmini. He was re-incarnation of Kama. Pradyumna was abducted by a

demon by name Sambara immediately when he was born to Rukmini. He was held

captive by the demon till he attained adolescence and after attaining the age

of 16 years, Pradyumna killed the demon and came back to his parents. Another

son which I recollect is son of Kriahna-Jambavati. His name was Samba. He

abducted Lakshamana daughter of Duryodhana and married with her. He was

responsible for end of Yaduvansha.3)Was Lord Krishna a Brahmin or a Shatriya

(warrior class)? He was son of Vasudev and Devaki from ChandraVansha. He

belonged to Kshtriya class. More popularly he was reffered as Yadav Kula which

many at that time thought that not pure Kshtriya class. 4)How did Lord Krishna

die?and5) why did Lord Krishna, the creator of the universe and the orator of

the Hindu way of life die at the hands of an ordinary hunter? The story you have

given is correct. Regarding the answer to 5th question, the answer lies in the

fact that Gandhari (Mother of Kauravas) at the end of war held Krishna

responsible for the destruction of Kuru Vansha. She then cursed Krishna that

after exactly 36 years from now Kriahna vansha/Kula will also see same death.

They will fight among each other(like Kauravas) and will destroy each other.

Moreover, Krishna will wander in the Jungle like a ordinary person and will be

killed by a Vyadha(hunter) like a ordinary person.Hearing this Krishna said "It

will happen like this".As I told you,the Samba,son of Kriahna-Jambavati,was

responsible for end of Yadu vansha. The story goes like this,Yadavs tried to

play trick with Rishi Durvasa by dresing Samba as pregnant woman and asked

Durvasa for possible progeny of Samba. He cursed Samba that he will deliver a

Iron piller and because of that only whole Yadu purush will die. That is how

all died from Yadukula. Krishna received a death like a commoner because of

Gandhari Shapa and moreover Krishna accepted that. This is what I could

recollect offhand about krishna. I hope this will help you. For many real

embarssment comes after they 'study' Hinduism. Just a word of caution! if by

any chance you intend to learn Hindu scriptures. Thanks a lot for your Time and

Dear Mukund,

You will find a wound to the feet is a strong theme through

many myths of all religions. It is usually an evolved soul who will bear this

suffering ie: Chiron the Guru/wounded healer in Greek philosophy.

Thought on this one some years back. Feet--Pisces of course, possibly the

most spiritual of signs, allowing moksha. There is always an element of

suffering involved because of this wound. Seems only fitting Krishna should die

in this manner, as it is an indication of 'advancement'.

As for curses, Krishna ordained this mode of death and given the spiritual

importance, it was hardly unworthy; HE gave Gandhari a great honour. Who's to

say she was an unrighteous person?. I believe the 'curse' could not come to

pass other than from a righteous person.

My mother had a terrible habit of cursing people, and they would fructify.

They were usually the 'doubled over in pain' variety. I wouldn't describe her

as unrighteous, although I can't imagine why a righteous person would want to

inflict pain. She saw it as justice.

I never approved of this behaviour regardless of her reasoning and would

often force her to 'take it back'!!. My mother had 'powers'. I don't believe

'just anybody' can cause a curse to manifest.

I can understand your apprehension, just pray your ex-wives don't get

together!! just kidding!! ;)

Warm Regards,

Ann.

[vedic astrology] Re: Questions on Lord Krishna

Hello Amol:Thank you for the comprehensive response, this really clears some of

the questions I had earlier related to Lord Krishna. However, your answer

related to Krishna's death begets one more question. Here it goes:If Lord

Krishna died a violent and unworthy death in jugle due to the curse of

Gandhari, then does the curse of a non-righteous person affect the native? We

all know that Krishna was on the side of the righteous and Gandhari despite

knowing and acknowledging that her sons were figting a non-righteous batttle,

cursed Krishna. Why would a curse of a non-righteous person frutify? Does this

mean that anyone and everyone who is jealous of us or whom we're pissing off in

some way can curse us and we'd have to bear the fruits of this curse?Lord

Krishna's death still doesn't make any sense to me. Even Ravan who was a sinner

was blessed with a royal death at the hands of the Ram (God himself), then why

was Lord Krihna the creator of the Universe and the "all knowingall

encompassing" entiity get such a low death just due to one curse of woman who

was on the side of non-righteous.Thank youMukund--- In

Dear Mukund Namste

your contention that Gandhari was not capable of giving curse is not

correct.Gandhari was a pativrata stree and she had a tapasharya to

her credit. If you see that science of Shap-Var you will observe

that only those who performed Tapashrya were authorised to give Shap

or Var. Gandhari was great tapasvani by the virute of self imposed

blindnees. Shap in the MAhabharat has been given for many reasons

but most of the time it was because of Anger/sorrow/deep

grief/insult. Women in the Mahabharat who suffered most, one of them

was Ghandhari. Her grief is justified because she lost her 100 sons

and their sons as well. Entire vansha of Dritarashtra got perish in

the war. If you see the grief of Draupadi after AShwatthama killed

her sons and there after pleadge of Arjuna to kill Ashwatthama, you

will understand grief of Gandhari. In mahabharat whenever there was

killing of Son,mother has reacted voilently. Be it Draupadi,Uttara

or Subharda. Gandhari lost not only her 100 sons but entire vansha.

So she definitely was justifed.

Moreover she had great power of her sacrifice for her blind husband.

So she was competent as well to give Shap.If you read the exact word

you will know that she said to Kriahna "Hey Chakradhar,Gaddhar, you

are Kulotpanana and well versed with Vedas, but still you were

indiffeent and neglected Kuru-Pandava" Then she said her actual

Shap. So Gandhari held responsible Kriahna for his neglect towards

fighting Kuru-Pandavas. Being Veda himself she felt that Krishna

should have avoided this war. So it was that she held krishna

morally responsible for Kuru-Pandava war. It is something that many

held Gandhiji responsible morally for India's partition. Gandhiji

got killed and Krishna got Shapa. I am not justifying Gandhi hatya

nor am I criticising it. My point is that when one is in deep grief

reaction is usally 'Shap' when you dont have power to over come it.

If you have power then it results in war or Hatya.

>Does this mean that anyone and everyone who is jealous of us or

whom

>we're pissing off in some way can curse us and we'd have to bear

the

>fruits of this curse?

I think No. Only deserving person can give Shap. Not everybody. If

deserving person i.e. who has done tapascharya of any kind, becomes

jealous then possibly it may come true. But one thing is sure Shap

given by deserving will always fructify. No escape from it. Shapa

can not be taken back. Its intensity can be reduced by giving

UHShapa but it will always fructify. That is why it is said once you

give Shapa you reduce half of your Tapa power.

Krishna Death

Now as regards to death of krishna, lets keep in mind that Ved Vyasa

created Krishna as purnavatar. Krishna is considered as perfect yogi

a perfect incarnation of lord vishnu. Purnaavatar must get merged

with purnaBrhama. Krishna never got any injury in the Mahbharata war

but with a arrow of Vyadha whose name was not known. "Pranavo DhnuH

shrohtyatma brahmatallakshamuchate" is what Upanishad says. So

Brhama is always obtained by the arrow. This time itwas Anamik

Vyadha. Vyadha means all pervading. 'Dha' means to keep and Vya

means every where. Normal use of this word means one who wanders in

Jungle is simplification of this word. Anamik means who does not

have a name. So in effect it is that, which is everywhere and has

hold every thing and has no name. This then becomes 'Brhma'. So Ved

Vyasa completed the Krishna avatar by suggesting that Brahma gets

merged with Brahma. So it was not a low death but rather BrhamaMilan.

Thanks a lot for your Time and Space.

come on mukund this is to please primary school

childer as krishna is a given name see similarity to

christan and since atma is all omnipotent

and omniscience and omnipresent so think

krishna as a atam and he is god as child as warrior as

adviser to arguna it is all

wise man story .

i would say it was harry potter of the time

but hindus live in past so is there god and do all

mockery for their greed in present.

west common people dont have much hang over about

collecting and keeping they work they spend

and die not leaving much stone to temple.

we save and dont do much charity in life and when

dieing give away all the non milk giving cow to

brahmin.

if dont trust me read the nikit story of upanisad

when he quis his father his father gave away his

own son and nikit has good dialage with god of death.

i dont mean socety in west is all saintly

but my point is we can only live and clene our own

center so the bigger circle around us rediate

and pleasing back to us.

i believe seeing poverty all around world is

making us part of it and it will hit us someday if

dont redically find way for happiness for all

humannkind.

regards

my krishna lives in my heart and its center is in your

heart aswell,

the gopi and his wife are stories made by humans

to sing his song and atman krishna was pure conscios

and mingle in everything.

so conflit is in mind and body is matter atman

is free from those boundries i see that is

a deeper meanibng of lella.
