Guest guest
Dear Jay, I programmed it exactly following BPHS (and also exactly as taught in my book). There are six differences between the ashtakavarga taught by Parasara (in BPHS) and Varahamihira (in Brihajjatakam). The differences are in Venus and Moon AV. Most people follow Varahamihira today, but I chose to follow Parasara. The reason was clearly explained in my book ("Vedic Astrology: An Integrated Approach"). Lite version is free and I force people to follow what I believe in. In commercial JHora 5.0, I gave the option to choose either Parasara's definition or Varahamihira's definition. In fact, I give six different options, so that you can mix Parasara's definition and Varahamihira's definition. In addition, there are other controversies like using rasi chakra vs bhava chakra. I use rasi chakra. If lagna is at 27 deg in Leo and Saturn is at 3 deg in Virgo, some people take Saturn to be in the 1st house from lagna, but I take him to be in the 2nd house (entire Leo is 1st house and entire Virgo is 2nd house). Please note that ashtakavarga is not about just lagna as a reference - it is about 8 references. These guys who use bhava chakra do not find bhava chakra w.r.t. all the eight references! If lagna is at 15 deg in Leo, Jupiter is at 27 deg in Leo and Saturn is at 3 deg in Virgo, they take Saturn to be in the 2nd house from both lagna and Jupiter. So their approach is neither there nor here!! If you ise exact longitudes to find houses, you should do it with all references to be consistent. But, if you were to find houses w.r.t. all the references, the houses would not match. You may potentially divide the zodiac into 96 different regions, as opposed to 12. You may end up with 1 deg Ar-2.3 deg Ar being the 1st house from lagna, 7th house from Sun, 3rd house from Moon etc; 2.3 deg-5.6 deg Ar being the 1st from lagna, 7th from Sun and 4th from Moon etc; and so on. Thus, Jupiter may be benefic from 2 references in 1 deg-2.3 deg in Aries, benefic from 3 references in 2.3 deg-5.6 deg in Aries and so on. You may get 96 regions in the AV and not just 12. This is clearly illogical. On the other hand, if you don't find houses w.r.t. all the references, why then do it from lagna? If Saturn at 3 deg in Virgo is in the 2nd house from Jupiter at 27 deg in Leo, why can't the same Saturn be in the 2nd house from lagna at 27 deg in Leo? Why one rule for lagna as a reference and another for Jupiter as a reference? This is equally illogical. Thus, I reject the use of bhava chakra as illogical invention of some people. Rasi chakra alone must be used when finding ashtakavarga. BTW, could you forward me the mail in question from that "well known astrologer"? Best regards,Narasimha PS: Hoping you won't mind, I am cc'ing it to vedic astrology , for the benefit of others. - J.Weiss Narasimha P.V.R. Rao Tuesday, July 15, 2003 9:19 AM Ashtakvarga issue in JH Dear Narasimha, I trust that you and your family are well. Could you please inform me of the source that you used to program ashtakvarga in JH(L) ? I am trying to "defend" your masterpiece to a very 'aggressively doubting' well known astrologer who is in doubt of it's accuracy. It is the differences of the results between all the various software that brought up the subject. God bless Kind regards Jay Weiss
