Om Gurave Namah

Dear Friends,

Vedic Tithi for festivals is the Tithi at Sunrise time, As most

prayers are done during the Sunrise. So for Guru Poornima there has

to be full moon(0 to 12 deg from sun) at Sun Rise time When Sun is in

Gemini.

The method is same for Ram Navami (S9,Waxing 9th Moon,Sun in Aries),

Krishna Janma Ashtami (Sun in Leo and Waning 8th face of moon) etc

For example using Chicago(US Central Time zone) as the place in JHora

and got the following Sunrise time and Guru Poornima at Sunrise.

July 13, 2003

Time: 5:30:00

Time Zone: 5:00:00 (West of GMT)

Place: 87 W 39' 00", 41 N 51' 00"

Chicago, Illinois, USA

Altitude: 596.00 meters

Lunar Yr-Mo: Subhanu - Ashadha

Tithi: Pournimasya (Sa) (41.04% left)

Vedic Weekday: Saturday (Sa)

Nakshatra: Poorvashadha (Ve) (36.39% left)

Yoga: Vaidhriti (Ju)

Karana: Bava (Su)

Hora Lord: Mars (5 min sign: Pi)

Mahakala Hora: Jupiter (5 min sign: Cn)

Kaala Lord: Sun (Mahakala: Sun)

Sunrise: 5:30:03 (July 12)

Sunset: 20:21:40 (July 12)

Janma Ghatis: 59.9979

Ayanamsa: 23-54-08.19

Sidereal Time: 0:02:59

Dear Sanjay,

Most festivals have specific rituals associated with them, and are quite

different from morning prayers. Many panchanga makers choose the day when

navamsa prevails during madhyahna kala for rama navami, and the day when

ashtami prevails during nishita kala for janamashtami. I have collected

details for a few more festivals, and placed them at

http://www.mudgala.com/panchanga/festival_rules.html.

Jaya JagannathDear Ajit,

I can find some logic behind your statement. In Rama Navami, the Sun has to be

the stronger and hence Noon is chosen when Sun is on the meridian and the day

on which Navami prevails during the noon time is taken as the Rama Navami day.

However, for Janmastami, we take the Midnite as Lord Krishna was born in

Midnite (at that time, astami was running) and hence we chose the Astami Tithi

to prevail during those hrs.

Even though most follow the tithi at Sunrise to be the tithi of the day, this

can very well happen that the tithi has just ended immidiately after the

Sunrise. In such cases, we would be following the old tithi. I think this can

be refined as we have modern calculation tools and we can calculate faster the

moment of tithi change. Thus the day on which we celebrate different festivals

can depend on what time the festival is being celebrated, the specific tithi

should prevail during that time.

Best Wishes

Sarajit
