Guest guest
Thanks for the links, they were very informative and also for your example. Thanks for your effort, one question comes to my mind which has been there for a long time. Usually for poojas I think Gothram is used, I am a Christian so how can I trace my Gothram. If this question is invalid pls ignore it due to lack of knowledge. Are you or anyone on this list knowledgeable on traditional (non-astrological) remedies for health problems like heart disease, paralysis, back pains, bed wetting etc. If someone is there pls let me know. High regards, Juliet Dear Juliet,Please go thru the following links, they will give you some good information on Gotram.* http://www.bharatavarsha.com/iyer/gotra/gotra.html* http://www.bharatavarsha.com/iyer/gotra/Kevalaangirases.htmlFor example if you want to see "The genealogy of the Angirasas" (I belongs to this)* http://www.bharatavarsha.com/iyer/gotra/genealogy/angirasagene.htmHope this is helpful.RegardsRao Catch all the cricket action. Guest guest
Dear Juliet, My comments hereunder. - Juliet Fernandes vedic astrology Wednesday, June 11, 2003 4:39 PM [vedic astrology] Gothram [snip] I am a Christian so how can I trace my Gothram. If this question is invalid pls ignore it due to lack of knowledge. Answers, rather than questions, are more liable to be invalid, so don't be afraid to ask. Your question, though, is perfectly valid. Roughly put, gothram is basically patriarchal lineage. With us Hindus, this is something that's carefully documented and handed down very well, which is why you hear of it such a lot hereabouts. If you can somehow manage to trace the route upwards until the primal male (for want of a better term), you'd have found your gothram too. Honestly speaking, I doubt you might find success retracing your steps, unless someone has actually maintained good records. Are you or anyone on this list knowledgeable on traditional (non-astrological) remedies for health problems like heart disease, paralysis, back pains, bed wetting etc. If someone is there pls let me know. Guest guest
Dear Juliet, I think Ramapriya had answered to your questions upto some extent. Honestly, I do not have the knowledge to comment on Gotram and Pravara for a Non-Hindu person. But, what I have seen at ISCON temple in Australia ( when I was living there some years ago), few Non-Hindu people are given the Diksha by a guru and given a name with a gotram, which I believe to be Lord Krishna's Paramapara. Here I may be wrong too. So there must be a way to get the information you are looking for. I would request on-behalf of you to our Guru's to give the reply to your question "How to trace my Gothrams being a Christian". Guest guest
Aum Namah Shivaya Namaste, > But, what I have seen at ISCON temple in Australia ( when I was > living there some years ago), few Non-Hindu people are given the > Diksha by a guru and given a name with a gotram, which I believe to > be Lord Krishna's Paramapara. Here I may be wrong too. > > So there must be a way to get the information you are looking for. What you are referring to is a different matter. It is not Krsna's parampara or actual gotra that is given in the above situation. Gaudiya Vaisnavas belonging to the ISKCON follow Srila Prabhupada's teachings. They believe that once an aspirant has surrendered to Sri Krsna and is initiated by a qualified Vaisnava guru, the question of gotra (traditionally seen through brahmanas tracing themselves to the pravaras) does not arise. As devotees of the Lord, they all belong to one large family. So all this talk of gotra holds no good. And to affirm this, they proclaim that they belong to Achyuta gotra. They believe that among vaisnavas, there is no other gotra other than Achyuta gotra. It is a wonderful thought. But it is a totally different matter as compared to the traditional idea. I once again clarify that I appreciate the Vaisnava thinking in this respect. Not only the Vaisnavas, certain other schools that follow the agamas/tantras share a similar belief. The Vaisnavas follow the Pancaratra agama tradition, while there are other Agama traditions too like the Sakta and Saiva agamas. In general the more liberal Tantric traditions share this belief. Of course there are some very orthodox tantric traditions that follow the Vedic tradition. There are other Vaisnavas who adhere to the Gotra system orthodoxly. > > I would request on-behalf of you to our Guru's to give the reply >to > your question "How to trace my Gothrams being a Christian". > Gotra has many connotations and the meaning and significance keep varying according to the context. Like certain other areas of Hinduism, it has cultural, social, spiritual angles to it. Depending on one's outlook and the context, it could be a useful or dangerously sensitive issue. In a nutshell, I would suggest that there is no need for a Christian or Muslim to try knowing their gotra. Because there simply is none. In this sense it is largely a cultural, religious and social thing peculiar to Hinduism. Well one can stay away from it and be sure that one has not missed anything spiritually inevitable. Largely Gotra falls under one of those practices that is peculiar to the Vedic culture ('Culture' as different from 'Spirituality'). Religion has many purposes- some immediate and some ultimate. The ultimate purpose of all religions is Spirituality. But each religion has many other immediate concerns that it has to deal with, that may be culturally or socially peculiar to the times and contextual needs or practices. For someone to benefit from a religion's true import (i.e. spirituality), one need not get into all the areas, some of which are unrequired. Hope this clarifies. Guest guest
Dear Mr.Rao, I am a woman (smiles). I was mainly looking at disease freeing foods, I should have drafted my letter more articulately. Thanks for the tip on Aloe Vera gel, that is informative for me. Can we take the liquid form or should one take only the whole leaf as you mentioned. I also heard that for radiant glowing skin, Aloe vera gel is very good. You had mentioned that alternative remedies takes time, isn't it beneficial in the long run for the body. Thanks for your reply. Guest guest
Dear Ramapriya, Yes, you are right it would be tough tracing my gothram. Thanks for your reply. I couldn't understand what is alt.health.ayurveda, one of my favorite haunts ) Is that a website that you are referring to? I thank Mr. Rao Nemani, Mr. Satya and everyone who have replied to me on my questions. High regards, Juliet
Guest guest
Hi Juliet, alt.health.ayurveda is a group, much like this one. The time that a message takes to appear there, though, depends on factors like the backbone, connectivity, etc. If you're on usenet, you'll ask me nothing more, I bet. And while I'm at it, I'll recommend misc.health.alternative too. You won't find an opinionated cuss too less in these groups, but you do learn a lot more, with a real wide perspective. Come aboard and you'll know it all ) Warm regards, Ramapriya hubli - "astrolearner2002" <astrolearner2002 <vedic astrology> Thursday, June 12, 2003 7:39 PM [vedic astrology] Re: Gothram > Dear Ramapriya, > > Yes, you are right it would be tough tracing my gothram. Guest guest
JAYA JAGANNATHA! Dear members, Namaste. Is for diksha, in Vaishnava lineage the meaning of diksha is that we become the members of Krishna's spiritual family. So it is called achyuta-gotra-svikara, and is one of the panca/samskaras received at initiation. According to this, the diksha guru also gives a name to the disciple. As for traditional gotra classification, I have myself seen in Tirupati Varahaswami mandira when we were offering puja, that the pujari was asking for our gotra, and for those of non-hindu birth, he asked for their nakshatra. So as Satya pouinted out, there must be some hidden connection between the 8 rishis and the nakshatras assigned to them. If anyone has ny afurther ideas on this, please don't hesitate to reveal it.
