JAYA JAGANNATHA!

Dear Ramapriya,

Namaste.

I'm afraid I have to disappoint you. Yamaraja is said to be one of the 12

Mahajanas or great teachers of the universe, coupled with personalities like

Lord Brahma, Lord Siva, Narada Muni, the 4 Kumaras, Lord Kapiladeva,

Svayambhuva Manu, Pralhada Maharaja, Janaka Maharaja, Bhismadeva, Bali

Maharaja, Sukadeva Goswami, and Lord Yamaraja is the 12th. So all these persons

are great devotees of the Lord, and they show us how to surrender to Krishna.

Yamaraja punishes the sinful souls by giving them the reaction of their sins.

In Jyotish, Saturn is also called the brother of Yama. So the influence of Yama

is likew that of Saturn. He is not evil, he just gives what we deserve, in order

to teach us to follow Dharma. Interestingly, Sarturn is said to be the son of

Surya and his wife Chaya (shadow), so sinful reacions are like the shadow of

dharma. According to Srimad Bhagavatam Yamaraja is the son of Svaaymbhuva Manu.

Of course the other version is also supported there:

(SB. 6.6.40-41)

"Samjna, the wife of Vivasvan, the sun-god, gave birth to the Manu named

Sraddhadeva, and the same fortunate wife also gave birth to the twins Yamaraja

and the River Yamuna. Then Yami, while wandering on the earth in the form of a

mare, gave birth to the Asvini-kumaras.Chaya, another wife of the sun-god,

begot two sons named Sanaiscara and Savarni Manu, and one daughter, Tapati, who

married Samvarana."

So it appears that Yama and Sani are only stepbrothers, meaning that their

father is the same, but mothers are different, Samjna for Yama and Chaya for

Sani.

Regarding the Sun's marriage I found the following extract on the site VedicSaktis.com:

The Sun, Surya was married to Samjna and she bore him three children. Because of

the Sun's unbearable brilliance Samjna left him and left Chaya (shadow) in her

place as wife, while she goes off to contemplate her marriage. Because the Sun

is so bright, and at the same time not bright enough, as the saying goes, he

does not discover this deception until Chaya, the shadow wife, has bore him

three more children. Enraged he goes to his father-in-law to find what has

happened to his beautiful Samjna. Tvastr, his father-in-law explains that his

daughter found the Sun too bright to bear. So, in conciliation the Sun allows

Tvastr to put him on his cutting lathe and shear away his excess brilliance

until the Sun became a beautiful sight to behold. Surya then reunites with his

wife, Samjna and has 3 more children. The moral of the myth suggests the

stronger the Sun the bigger the ego, so much in fact that there may be little

room for other people to exist in such egoistic brilliance! This is where the

excess vanity of the Sun exerts a malefic influence.

I would be interested to know which Purana contains this story. If anyone knows,

please send me the reference.

[vedic astrology] A quasi-astro doubt

Hi all,

Just wanted to know if Yama is the Hindu equivalent of Satan, our version of the

devil (bhoot)? An American in our office asked me this recently and I replied

with a "Yes", and I hope I wasn't wrong :o)

Warm regards,

|Hare Rama Krishna|

Dear Gauranga,

The story is very interesting and doesn't have todo with the Sun only.

"saMGYa" means 'to recover consciousness'. She bore the children: Manu, Yami and

Yama, each holding very important roles in our lives.

Now due to the extreme light of Vivaswan (the one who illuminates), she left her

shadow in replacement, and after having visited her

father Tvastr (the heavenly carpenter), she disguised herself as a mare and went

to the forrest to perform austerities.

So basically the Sun lost his consciousness.

Only after Yama (Dharmaraja- Saturn) having spotted the alienation of Sangya's

shaddow towards the 3 first born, did Vivaswan see the error in Chaya, and

hence started looking for his consciousness.

The source i Vishnu Purana, however i can't give a direct reference.

Dear Ramapriya,

I think not. Satan entices people not to follows God's Laws, whereas Yama

himself follows the Lord's laws and is also known as Dharmaraja. nachiketa

learnt about Dharma and nature of almighty from him and one Upanishada is

devoted to the dialogue between them.

Yama is Dharmaraja. or God of Justice..He is certainly not to be equated

Satan. Yama is also depicted as the Guru of Nachiketa in the Upanishads
