Guest guest
Dear Palanivelu, In India, Pournima starts at 12:51 pm on 15th and ends at 9:06 am on 16th. So the civil day corresponding to 15th (i.e. from the sunrise of 15th to the sunrise of 16th) is considered Chaturdasi (because Chaturdasi runs at sunrise on 15th) and 16th is considered Pornima (because Pournima runs at sunrise on 16th). That is what your calendar shows. In Boston, however, Pournima starts at 3:21 am (early in the morning, before sunrise) on 15th and ends at 11:36 pm on 15th. So the civil day corresponding to 15th is considered Pournima (because Pournima runs at sunrise on 15th, when the civil day commences). Because Krishna Pratipat (Padyami) starts at 11:36 pm on 15th, it will be running at sunrise on 16th. So 16th (civil day) will be considered Krishna Pratipat. In any case, I do Satya Narayana vratam at night *during* Pournima *tithi* (i.e. not necessarily on the civil day that has Pournima at sunrise). If Pournima starts at 5 pm on 15th and ends at 4 pm on 16th, people will consider 15th to be Sukla Chaturdasi and 16th to be Pournima. But, if I do vratam on the night of 16th, Moon would be waning. Whether the civil day is considered Pournima or not does not matter much to me. At the time I do the vratam, I want Moon and Sun to be almost in Samasaptaka and Moon to be behind Sun's longitude (i.e. almost Full waxing Moon). So I do the vratam on 15th night itself in such a case. My criteria are two: (1) Pournima tithi should be running during the vratam (i.e. Moon - Sun should be between 168 and 180 degrees) and (2) It should be night then. The third criterion of the civil day being labeled as a Pournima (based on whether Pournima was running at sunrise or not) is optional to me (but it is satisfied this time anyway). Some people may disagree with my approach, but it does not matter in the case of this particular month. Especially this month, we are going to perform the vratam towards the end of Pournima, when Moon is almost full. So it is even more auspicious. Moreover, Satya Narayana vratam is recommended particularly on the Full Moons of Vaisakha, Kartika and Magha months. This is Vaisakha month. So 15th night (at Boston) is a very very auspicious time for praying to Satya Narayana. May Jupiter's light shine on us, Narasimha PS: I am cc'ing it to the list, so that anyone else having the same doubt is answered. PPS: We will have our monthly Full Moon ritual of Satya Narayana vratam on 15th May 2003 during 8:00 pm to 10:30 pm at our house in South Grafton, Mass, USA. All are welcome to attend and have the prasad for dinner. If you want to come, please let us know so we can plan and also I can send you directions. Please send a private mail to pvr. - "pals" <pals <pvr Sunday, May 11, 2003 10:15 PM Full moon day, satya narayana vratam 15th or 16th ? > Om Namah Shivaya > > Dear Narasimha, > > Greetings!. Guest guest
Namaste all, I am sending this mail in case somebody else decided to do Satya Narayana vratam at the same time after seeing my mail. I later noticed that there is a total lunar eclipse from 9:05 pm in Boston. Performing the vratam and eating the prasad during eclipse is not recommended by Sastras. So, if anybody else is thinking of doing this vratam this month, it will be better to time it before the eclipse. In my case, the vratam will start at 6 pm and end by 8:30 pm. May Jupiter's light shine on us, Narasimha PS: Jagannatha Hora 5.0 can be used to find the lunar and solar eclipses for your city. It gives the start and end times of various phases in the eclipses (e.g. penumbral eclipse phase, partial eclipse phase, total eclipse phase etc).
