Guest guest
Shri Sanjay Rath, The article on Upapada was very enlightening. Thank you very much. I some questions I hope you can give clue to. What happens when the benefic planet placed in Upapada is in debility? Does this now give negative results? If planet placed in Upapada is retrograde does it reverse the indicated results? What is the difference in results indicated by the Lord of the Upapada and the planet placed in Upapada? If exalted benefic planet is placed in Upapada can this affect the status of spouse family? Lord of Upapada in debilty vs the planet placed in Upapada in debility? How will the results differ? or does not the state of the planet in Upapada matter? merely the natural indications of the planet to be studied? like Venus in Upapada means beautiful spouse, Jupiter in upapada means dutiful spouse and such. Whether it is in exaltation or debility Venus in upapada always gives beautiful spouse? Please clarify if possible. Similarly, the indications of the 2nd house from the Upapada will even more vividly indicate the outcome of marriage. The relationship between the UL and the AL also gives us the picture about the relationship or quality of the marriage. So, UL becomes very important when we want to see the married life as it is the arudha of our commitment of marriage. However, this concept can be a bit flexible when we look at the various varghas, for example, the UL in D 10 will show what our colleagues think of our spouse. > [Rath:] The concept of Upapada has been explained in the incarnation of dattatreya. http://srath.com/hindu/datta_upanisad.htm Basically, human beings (manushya) are selfish and cannot give. They have to be taught to give and this giving is the essence of spiritual learning for a manushya. Giving is seen from the 12th house. The manifestation of giving or 'who will you give to' is seen from the Arudha pada of the 12th house. By the way, this is given both in Parasara and Jaimini sutra. In fact it is Parasara who has dedicated a whole chapter to this. When reckoned form lagna, the upapada will represent the spouse and the fifth therefrom will represent the children to whom you give. > > Similarly, the moon represents the Mana and your society/family at large. The Upapada reckoned from chandra lagna is also called Chandra Upapada and here the giving is to the society, family and in the spiritual sence to the Pitris. The purest material form of the Moon is water and that is why water (chandra/soma) is given (upapada) to the pitris with the gayatri mantra (24 syllable-12 house). > > Extending this theory further to the Sun, the Surya Upapada (Arudha of the 12th house from the Sun) will represent what we give to the whole world at large, to the devatas, to the Gurus and the spiritual master. Offering a lamp (Agni/Sun) to the deity is the best material thing to give. this is the basic concept of the Upapada. > > Lordships and other things can be learnt from Parasara. If the lord of UL is exalted and strong, then the spouse is from a powerful/rich family. If debilitated and weak, then poor/weak family. Thus the avastha and status of the lord of Upapada will indicate the avastha/status of the family of the spouse (in the Rasi chart of course..what about navamsa?) > > Now we have a clearer picture that the definition of marriage according to the maharishis is to find a person of the opposite sex to whom you will give everything and keep giving with joy without any expectations. Next comes the story of Adam's apple. Who has asked the husband and wife to have physical intimacy? from where did this come into the Upapada picture? How do you know that your wife is your *real* wife and how do we differentiate her from others? It is from the face, and that is why we have photographs of the face in passports for identification. Now look at Jaimini's brilliance. "If Rahu is in the second from the seventh lord from Upapada, then the native has protruding teeth" (!!!). The Upapada was meant to be the partner who we shall give to, and then we decided that we might as well have a litle bit of physical intimacy (7th house from Upapada) and what attracted or identified? Itwas the face. The second house (face/mouth etc) from the seventh lord from Upapada shows the facial features and expressions that shall attract or repel the spouse. > ...there is a lot to Upapada. > > Where does the spouse come into the picture in Dasamsa?? Why drag your spouse into your office? If UL has anything to do with the 10th house/lord in the Rasi chart then the spouse has some link to the office, else he/she is a part of personal life. > > Additionally, > >I have some doubts :- > > > >1. Can anyone fast on the days on UL lord, are there certain kinds of > >combinations by which one can't fast on UL days. > The concept of fasting is to give .When we fast we give up our food for our prayer or what ever we are fasting for.In most cases fasting on the UL day indicates our dedication to our commitment or the need to have a commitment. In rare cases where the UL is greatly afflicted one may be advised not to fast on this day.For example, if Rahu is present in the UL and along with some other afflictions and the married life has a very negetive influence in the natives life perhaps its not the best thing to be more giving to Rahu and the native may be reqired tobe stronger in terms to face the Rahu in thier life. So,its important to study the various aspects of the UL. > [Rath:] No way Kanu. Everyone can and should fast on the days of the lord of the Upapada. One of my old students has Rahu in Scorpio in Upapada and I advised him not to marry. If he has to marry then he has to keep Upapada fast for at least one year. he has sincerely done that and worshipped Narayana, so his marriage is stable. > > 2. If there are two lords then should the fasting be of the strongest > >co lord or weakest. > If the UL falls in Scorpio, lorded by Mars and Ketu, the fast is done on Tuesday. If it falls in Aquarius lorded by Saturn and Rahu then the fast is done on Saturday. If there are planets in the UL the fast is still done on the day of the lord of the UL.However, while calculating the UL the stronger lord is seen. > [Rath:] Even if there are two lords, the day indicated by them will be the same. Aquarius has Rahu & Sat - both indicate saturday. Scorpio has Mars & Ketu - both indicate tuesday. > > >3. What are the exact benefits of fasting on UL days. > Fasting on UL days indicates ones dedication to the need for the commitment and also to pacify the planet. This results in improving the relationship which is already present or may bring the spouse to the native sooner in case of the single person. So while fasting on the UL lord's day we are praying for the better ment of our marriage or for it to happen in our life. > [Rath:] Spouse is in best behaviour and is always going to be nice to you. Thats right Kanu..marriage is quick and all badhak to marriage vanishes. > > >4. No food at all. Since the sun is always beneficial to the Upapada (standard rule), the fasting is done with the Sun as sakshi (witness) and is from sunrise to sunset. I know a person who said he had acidity problem and all kinds of stories and so I allowed him to have some fruit juices and uncooked food...he ate a crate of mangoes on the day of the fast! Is this fasting. in fact the thought of fasting made him more hungry and gluttonous. No, this is not right. > > >5. Recently a member used the term Gauna Pada, what is the meaning of > >Gauna exactly. > > Upa pada is also called Gauna Pada. The renunciation of marriage or spouse is also seen from the Gauna Pada. > [Rath:] ??? (Smile) One of the meanings (aaparant) is from a literal translation of the word as secondary and this means that the Upapada is to be studied second after Arudha/Pada Lagna, or it is secondary after AL. > > >6. Can people fast on AL days also, would this help in increasing of > >image, status and does it depend on some factors. > Fasting on AL days is not advisable. When we fast we are giving up something.Do we want to give up our image or arudha? If we did give up our image or arudha in this world what is one left with? > [Rath:] Consider the question from this angle - would fasting on AL days make us more spiritual? > > >7. Fasting should be continued throughout life. Why wait for something bad to happen and then start. > > >8.
