Guest guest
Dear Gurus, learned ones, and the seekers of divinity, I have a question regarding tithi start/end time and nakshatra start/end time for daily purposes.. Following are some instances: 1) Let's say the 4th tithi (Chaturthi), technically starts at 11:00 am Sunday. Does whole Sunday get considered as Chaturthi? If so, from what time till what time? sunrise to sunset? Or, does Chaturthi exactly start at 11:00 am and lasts for exactly 12 degrees ? Can somebody please fill me in on this ? I've heard there are various schools of thoughts: e.g 1) that considers sunrise time as beginning till next day's sunrise (astrological day in fact) 2)another one that considers: if technically, Chaturthi starts before 12:00 pm, the whole day is Chaturthi; & 3) that considers the technical beginning time and the time when 12 degrees pass. 4) How is Nakshatra start/end time interpreted ? I guess, my question regarding the tithi holds the same for Nakshatra too.. I hope my concern can be understood. I've been dwelling into this field for about a year, and you know how it goes..so many things fundamentals go bypassed....thank you for your time, and i will really appreciate anybody's input on it... Guest guest
Dear Shailesh, You are not the only one who has been stumped with this problem. Technically ( or rather, mathematically ), the Tithi changes every time the longitudinal difference between the Sun and the Moon attains a multiple of 12 degrees. Thus if this difference was 36 degrees at 11:00 am, then the 3rd Tithi would be ending and the 4th Tithi starting at that moment. Now, the 4th tithi would remain in force until the longitudinal difference becomes 48 degrees, irrespective of what the time of day ( or night ) it is ! However, it is very inconvenient for us to keeping changing our tithis at irregular times, in accordance to the angular difference of the two luminaries, so for social purposes, the tithi running at the time of sunrise is accepted as valid for approximately 24 hours, i.e. till the next sunrise. In other words, let's say the longitudinal difference between the sun and the moon is 35 degrees, 59 minutes, and 59 seconds at the time of sunrise ( i.e 3rd Tithi ). The entire day ( upto the next sunrise ) will be considered as the 3rd Tithi, in spite of the fact that technically the Tithi would have been 4th ( i.e. at 36 degrees difference ), a few moments AFTER sunrise. Hope this helps. Guest guest
TITHI COMPUTATION: Tithi is a luni-solar day. It is among one of the Panchanga (five limb) of time measurement, related with "Pataal Tattwa" i.e. Water element and generally considered in Mahurata. It has not any connection with sunrise or sunset. Tithi can be obtained by taking the difference between Moon's longitude and Sun's longitude. Thus its begining and ending time does not depend on length of weekday, sunrise, 12:00 am or 12:00 pm etc. There are total 30 lunar days, wich are divided into two category, i.e. Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha. So there are ultimately 15 tithis on each phase, 15 in Shukla(bright lunar phase) and 15 in Krishna(dark lunar phase). e.g. Shashthi (6th tithi) comence in Shukla paksha as well as in Krishna paksha. Only the name of 15th tithi is different for two mentioned phases. In Shukla paksha 15th tithi is called Poornamasi and in Krishna paksha it is called Amavasya. Example: Suppose on a certain day at mid-night Sun is into Aries at 10:00:00 and Moon is into Taurus at 15:00:00 (its mean 45:00:00 i.e. 30 degrees of Aries and 15 degrees of Taurus has been travelled). Now take the difference between them. (45:00:00 - 10:00:00) = 35:00:00 ;divide it by 12 we get. 2:55:00 or 2.916666 , in other words 2nd Tithi is elapsed and 3rd Tithi is currently running. And the balance/remaining portion is 8.3333%. Now suppose on next mid-night Sun is at 11:00:00 Aries and the Moon 27:30:00 Taurus. Now we get the difference of current position, wont fix Sun's or Moon's longitude. Hence (57:30:00 - 11:00:00) = 46:30:00 ;divide it by 12 as we did above, we get 3:52:30 or 3.875, this gives 4th tithi (Shukla Paksha Chaturthi) is going on, whose 87.5% is elapsed and 12.5% is remaining. But when was any tithi started and when will it end? Remember first tithi begins at the movement whenever Moon and Sun conjoin and ends when this difference reached to 12 degrees which is the initial point of second tithi, and third tithi starts when Moon reaches 24 degrees ahead of Sun. Similarly when the difference between Moon and Sun becomes 180, this is the end of 15th tithi(Poornamasi) and initial of 16th tithi (i.e. Krishana Paksha Pratipat). Example: Yesterday March 3, 2003. The Moon conjoined Sun at 7:34:15 am in Karachi (5 hours ahead of GMT), at 18:12:00 Aquarius. This time (7:34:15 am) was the starting time of 1st Tithi (Shukla Paksha Pratipat), Now observe(which obviously can't without computer) when will this differece reach upto 12 degrees. The required 12 degrees difference between Moon and Sun happens at March 4, 2003 at 8:39:00 am Karachi, which will be the ending time of 1st Tithi and begining of 2nd Tithi. So 1st Tithi started March 3rd at 7:34:15 am and ends March 4th at 8:39:00 am. We looked, there is not any connection of sunrise or sunset or starting time of day with Tithi begining and terminating time. NAKSHATRA COMPUTATION: Nakshatra is another important aspect of time enumeration related with "Vayu Tattwa" i.e. Air element. This is purely depends on the movment of Moon on special points of zodiacal belt. The entire zodiac of 360 degrees is divided into 27 equal segments. Each segment of 13 degree and 20 minute is called a nakshtra or Lunar Asterism. First Nakshatra (called Ashvini) starts when the Moon enters at 00:00:00 Aries and ends when the Moon reaches 13:20:00 Aries. Second Nakshatra (called Bharani) starts at 13:20:00 Aries and ends at 26:40:00 Aries. Third Nakshatra (called Krithika) initiates at 26:40:00 Aries and terminates when the Moon comes at 10:00:00 Taurus, and so on upto last nakshtra (called Revati) which begins when Moon comes at 16:40:00 Pisces and terminates at 30:00:00 Pisces. Hence, the Moon can be at 13:20:00 Aries at any time, either morning, evening, sunset or sunrise or even at the time of conjunction between Sun and Moon. And technically there is not any inter-correlation among Tithi, Nakshatra and Day. All are independant parameter of measuring time for astrological and astronomical purpose. No doubt, when certain Tithi coincide with specific Days and Nakshatras; special Yogas are formed generally used in Mahuratam, called Siddha yoga and Amirta Siddha yoga. Hope above explaination will remove the doubts you have. Guest guest
Dear Imran, Thank you for the explanation. I do understand that part, however was more concerned about the practice of some people, as I had mentioned in my question (below) that I've bumped into couple of schools of thoughts, which follow tithis/nakshatras from sunrise to sunset according to whatever tithi/naks appears to be at sunrise or at midday on that particular day..please let me know if you know more on this, or if you have come across the same ideas before. Thanks again for your explanation. Regards, Hari Om, Shailesh --- Muhammad Imran <astroimran wrote: > > Dear Sailesh, > > TITHI COMPUTATION: > > Tithi is a luni-solar day. Guest guest
Many people observe what is known as "UDATYA TITHI ", i.e. the tithith at Local Sun rise to be the Tithi for the whole day. Many others, take the TITHI to start and end from the correct calculations. TITHI is diff in Longitude of MOON - SUN divided by 12. So when this difference of Longitude is an exactly divisible by 12, a Tithi starts. The ending is when the Next Tithi starts. Due to the uneven movement of the MOON, a Tithi may start and End on the same day. So the correct thing is find the Tithi for the required time of the event. The same rules apply to Nakshatra's also. For Nakshtra there is no usage of the Nakstra at sun-rise, as the Naakstra for the Whole day. Guest guest
Jaya JagannathDear Shailesh There are many who have tried to answer your question. However here are my two cents. For fixing any muhurtha actually the tithi and nakshatra rising at the time of the muhirtha is important. Early days all the jyotishis didn't have access to the tithis and nakshatra changing every now and then and hence for all practical purposes they used to see the panchangam at the start of the day, i.e., Sunrise and used to keep the same tihis and nakshatras through out. However for important events when they used to find out the various potent yogas they used to take the actual start and end time of the pancha-angas to find out the exact duration for which the yoga will last. All the Pancha Anga can change in a day excluding the weekday which forms the basis for the day. Because we have access to modern days gadgets and equipments in aiding us in calculating these elements of Jyotish, we should use the exact ones for muhurthas Now this is a valid question when having vrata (fasting) based on the tithi, when the vrata should start, with the Sunrise or the with the start of the actual tithi. Sunrise shows the start of life and hence has a great significance in human life. Now most vratas are prescribed from the Sunrise to Sunset, here you have to take the tithi rising at the sunrise for the fixing the day one should do the vrata. Thereafter the effect of Tithi remains in the mind of the native even if it changes later.
