learning sanskrit

Dear List members,

Please forgive me for asking a non-astrology question but I think it

is indirectly related to astrology. I believe its good to know

sanskrit and study astrology classics directly in sanskrit rather

than the english translations. Because Sanskrit promotes holistic

thought. Also, some translations may be inaccurate.

Some of the list members seem to be from western background but they

also know Sanskrit well. I never took the sanskrit subject in school

and I just know a little from what my father taught me.

I would like to take advice from members who learnt sanskrit on their

own while not in India. Could someone recommend some books/courses,

etc?

Thanks

Sagar.

_Teach Yourself Sanskrit_ by Michael Coulson (can't recall publisher, but check

Amazon.com) is pretty good.

Also, _Devaavan.iipraveshikaa: An Introduction to the Sanskrit Language_ (book

and casettes) by Robert P. Goldman and Sally J. Sutherland (published by the

Center for South and Southeast Asia Studies at the University of California,

Berkeley) is quite nice.

Additionally, George L. Hart's _A Rapid Sanskrit Method_, published by Motilal

Banarsidass, is handy to have around.

Best of luck!

Sincerely,

J.I. Abbot
