[indianCivilization] The only Hindu temple built by an Englishman in India

Ref: "yogayAtrA-4", pp.45-48; published by Shrii Akhil Bhartiya Yoga Vedanta

Seva Samiti, Santa Shri Asharamji Ashram, Sabarmatii,

Ahmedabad-380005.****************************************************************************

In 1879 the British had , under the leadership of Colonel Martin from

the British Cantt. at Malwa, attacked Afghanistan. In the beginning Col. Martin

used to send messages to his wife. But the battle continued for long and the

Lady Martin did not get any more messages from her husband. She was very much

worried. Riding on a horse one day she went out and on the way she saw in a

temple some people worshipping Lord Shiva. She asked what they were doing. One

old Brahmin replied that they were worshipping Lord Shiva. On enquiry from Lady

Martin, he explained the greatness of Lord Shiva. Seeing her very worried, he

asked her what was the matter. She told him the situation. He suggested her to

observe the 11-day "laghu-rudrii anuSThAna" of the mantra "Om namaH ShivAya".

The Lady Martin prayed to Lord Shiva that if her husband returned safely from

the battle-field, she would build a Shiva temple and started to observe the

"11-day anuSThAna". At the end of 11th day, a messenger came to the temple and

handed over a letter from Colonel Martin to her. In the letter he had written:"

In the battle-field we were surrounded by the PaThAna soldiers. I would have

died along with the British soldiers. Under such precarious situation I

observed a yogii with matted hair from India appearing in the battle-field, who

was wielding a trident weapon (trishUla). By seeing the yogii the PaThAna

soldiers fled away. Then he said to me:'Do not be afraid. I am Lord Shiva. I am

pleased with the worship of your wife and have come to save you'." Reading the

letter the Lady Martin burst into tears and bowing her head she started praying

Lord Shiva. After a few days Col. Martin returned to the Cantt. Now

both husband and wife started praying Lord Shiva regularly. As per the wish of

his wife, Col. Martin built a Shiva temple in 1883 at the expenditure of Rs

15000/-. The inscription in that temple at Malwa still exists. This is the only

temple built by an Englishman in

India.****************************************************************************

BTW, has anyone on the list actually seen this inscription ?

Dear Saraijit,

There is no mention of the place or name of the mandir. As Malwa is a province

of what is now known as Madhya Pradesh it would, indeed, be difficult to veryfy

the veracity of the statement. Sant Asarambapu being from neighbouring state of

Gujarat, wonder why the Name of Mandir and the town/village where it is located

is not given, specially when the article purportedly states that the inscription

exists. Such ambiguous statements give the Hindu researchers of historical facts

a bad name.

Dear Chandrashekhar,

You are right, however, my intention was not to kindle an interest in the

original research of such events. However, to generate an interest on the

remdies that are possible or suggested for something. Actually I didn't doubt

the authenticity of the document and hence didn't bother to find out, whether

or not such temple really exists or not. I am sorry for my ignorance about the

place Malwa. I thought it is a small place, so can easily be verified. If you

are interested, I guess, you can verify from the origin of the article, from

the publisher. I humbly disagree with the fact that the statements of Hindu

researchers are ambiguous. I guess more depends on the author and can not be

generalised, eventhough there is enough scope for learning the objectivity in

research from the west. Having gone through one of the toughest academic rigour

during my masters, I know this.

I understand, this mail is not for me, but for the Hindu researches; just felt like responding.

Dear Sarajit,

When I said about casual attitude about Hindu researchers, I did not mean all

researchers. My thrust was about those, who preach religion, without bothering

to go deep into authenticity of their source of information. This tends to give

a bad name to all serious researchers and preachers for no fault of theirs.

I am certain you will agre that when one says, authoritatively, that an

inscription can be verified, then it is incumbent upon one to give full details

regarding the place and monument where the inscription exists.

It is this lackadiasical attitude which has given a bad name to this great

religion of ours and I was just expressing my anguish at such people. I know

that you are too sincere a person to make a wrong statement. I just wanted to

inform you about the casual way the statement was made by a source which

happens to be one of the most popular Kirtankar of our times.

I hope you have not misunderstood me.

Regards,

Chandrashekhar.
