Guest guest
Hare Rama Krsna Dear Anna, Why don't you do as others have talked so much about before? Start making a glossary of words, because if you really wanto learn astrology, you will need to understand some of the terms given here. So keep a small piece of paper next to you, and everytime u see a term u do not understand.. write it down. Send me a list when your reach a good ammount, and i will translate. Hello everyone, In order for all of us to benefit from every post on this, learning forum, it would be really very helpful if the Listers would try to 'translate' or explain Sanskrit or Hindu words. Understandably, use of Sanskrit to a certain extent, is necessary. However, I've noticed that some posvts are so overloaded /unnecessary, IMHO/ with Sanskrit-Hindu /not a language expert here/, that one feels like mistakenly joining Sanskrit- linguistic-forum List. Language shoould not be the focus, let alone barrier in discussing jyotish, IMHO. If Indian born listers, as I've noticed, to a lesser degree perhaps, have problem understanding posts, what westerners should say. Besides, If it's not the problm for most of us to read- study from the books written by jyotishi, that should be even less so on this List- meant to be useful for majority of us. Just a bit of consideration would solve this problem- and we all will benefit more. Thanks. Anna This happens occassionaly on GJ List- I am sending this there, too. Guest guest
Dear Anna, I understand your point, no doubt a valid one. However certain words in Sanskrit are difficult to translate as the import is lost in translation. You see Bhava could mean house at the same time in "Bhava chalit " horoscopes the meaning is 15degrees either side of Bhava Madhya(Degres of ascendant. Similar is the case with Dharma which translates to religion in english but in different context it could mean Duty. Many other such examples coud be given. Anyway most of the words are used and explained in the various books on Vedic Jyotish in english. It is always good to read them and try to understand their meaning. This helps in study of Jyotish(which again is a Sanskrit word). When ever there is any problem with any word that is not understood it would be better to post a message seeking its meaning from the group. Please treat this as a suggestion to help improve your knowledge of this vast science of Vedic Jyotish.
