OM KLEEM KRISHNAYA NAMAHA

Dear Chandrashekar ji,

As you said the Panchakshara Mantra is

NAMAHASHIVAYA.Om is added as a pranavakshara giving life to this powerful

Mantra. There are too many meanings for OM.

With best regards,

Ramadas Rao.

I have been watching this topic for

some time.If I may intervene, as I understand "Om Namah Shivaay" has

always been called as panchakshari mantra. Now if the line of reasoning in the

ongoing discussion is to be accepted it would be counted as different number of

words according to who is trying to decipher it.Were the ancient sages wrong in

calling the above mantra as Panchakshari? Please enlighten me.

OM KLEEM KRISHNAYA NAMAHA

Dear Narasimha rao ji,

Now I also have got a doubt. For example the Mantra OM

KLEEM KRISHNYA GOVINDAAYA GOPIJANA VALLABHAAYA SWAHA.has a total of 7 words and

a total of 19 syllables. So now how you will do this ?Will you divide the 19 by

12 and the remainder is again 7,that means the mantra Devatha sits in Lagna

only. or is it sits on 10th house ?

Please clarify my doubts.

With best regards,

Ramadas Rao.

Dear JK,

What was explicitly taught to me by Pt. Sanjay

Rath (author of VRA

quoted by you) is this:

(1) Number of words gives the source house from

which energy is drawn.

(2) Number of syllables gives the destination

house where fruits are

given.

(3) Count the distance from the source house to

the destination

house. Count the same number of houses from the

destination house.

The resultant arudha house is the devata sthana -

where the deity

sits.

For example, take "Om Gurave Namah".

Source is the 3rd house,

destination is the 6th house and devata sthana is

the 9th house of

Guru.

May Jupiter's light shine on us,

AUM NAMAH SHIVAYA

Dear group,

When it comes to mantras, Sadhana is more about silent practice, and

less of discussion. Theoretical knowledge of mantras is of no use at

all if one does not practice the sadhana of the mantra. And yes, most

mantras require being initiated into the practice by an adept. And if

one is initiated by an adept, he would have recieved the RIGHT

KNOWLEDGE AND INSTRUCTIONS that go with it. So generally speaking,

since I don't see any point in a theoretical discussion of mantras, I

try to stay away. In this case I guess I could share a little because

of a couple of reasons.

> The real panchakshari is Namah Sivaya, without OM.

stotra.

While it is true that the panchakshari is ENCODED (I wonder if the

word "extracted" is appropriate really) within the panchakshari

stotram, TRADITIONALLY THE PANCHAKSHARI IS TRACED TO THE FAMOUS RUDRA

ADHYAYA OR THE SATARUDRIYA OF THE YAJUR VEDA.

The Satarudriya is one of the most powerful prayers. "Ananta Vai

Vedah"-Infinite is the meaning of the Vedas. There are multiple

facets to the Satarudriya. "Rudra Syedam Rudriyam" Being

related to Rudra these are known as Rudriyam. Rudra is self-efflugent

and he is none other than Shiva Mahadeva. Rudradhyayam is the

essence of Yajurveda. Yajurveda is the head of Paramesvara, who is

the Veda Purusha. There are seven Skandhas in Yajurveda. There is

Rudradhyayi in the centre of the middle Skandha. In this Rudradhyayi

there are one thousand Rudra Mantras. And it is said that Namassivaya

or the Siva Panchakshara Mantra shines in the centre of these one

thousand Rudra Mantras. Rudram being in the middle, is considered the

face of Rudra or Paramesvara.

As the Yama Smriti affirms, Rudram is considered as the essence of

the Vedas and can absolve one of all sin the moment it is chanted.

The merits acquired by chanting this are immense. And what's more the

Rudram is very sonorous and musical. It is a great experience to

listen to a group of traditional vedic priests chanting it in a

chorus. In this regard, no vedic chant can probably surpass it. But

it is difficult to chant the Satarudriya, because it requires

training, as all veda mantras do. It takes years to learn a little of

the vedic chants from a practical point of view. So what do the

majority do? Are they to be deprived of the great benefits of the

Satarudriya?

No. As already stated, Namassivaya or the Siva Panchakshara Mantra

shines in the centre of these one thousand Rudra Mantras. Yajurveda

is the head of Paramesvara, who is the Veda Purusha. Rudram which is

in the middle is the face, Panchakshara is His eye, 'Siva' which is

in the centre of the `Namassivaya' is the apple of the eye. He

who does Japa of this Panchakshara is freed from births and deaths

and attains eternal bliss. This is the traditional view of the

panchakshari.

Now let me proceed to the mantra as such. Panchakshari is a

Mahamantra which is composed of five letters, Namassivaya. It is said

to be the best among seven crores of Mantras. I will take a diversion

here.

Some one seemed to be worried about chanting the mantra wrongly.

Someone is of the opinion that it is bhakti that matters largely. Yet

another may tell you that the science of mantras is an exact one and

you should not play with. All are right. For convenience sake one may

classify mantras into various categories. Without going too deep, let

me tell you the bare minimum.

The tantric mantras with prayoga are very much like an exact science

(I may post an introductory article explaining the rationale etc

later if I feel like- I remember M Deasai asking for a clarification

in another context). It is advisable not to play around with them

unless one has been initiated by an adept and has been instructed

fully. But there are mantras that are based on nama (names) of the

Lord. The Name of Lord Siva chanted in any way, correctly or

incorrectly, knowingly or unknowingly, carefully or carelessly, is

sure to give the desired result. Such sattvic mantras based on the

Lord's names can work very well just based on one's devotion and

GRACE.

As Swami Sivananda explained, "`Namah' means

`Prostration'. `Sivaya

Namah' means `Prostration unto Lord Siva'. The Jiva is

the servant of

Lord Siva from the Deha-Drishti. `Namah' represents Jivatman.

`Siva' represents Paramatman. `Aya' denotes

`Aikyam' or

identity of Jivatman and Paramatman. Hence `Sivaya Namah' is

a

Mahavakya, like`Tat Tvam Asi' which signifies the identity

between

the individual and the supreme soul".

The panchakshari is a safe mantra in that sense. Now let me tell you

of the variations of this mantra as I have learnt. Again I will quote

Swami Sivananda. "Panchakshara is of six kinds, viz., Sthula

Panchakshara (Namassivaya), Sukshma Panchakshara (Sivaya Namah),

Karana Panchakshara (Sivaya Siva), Mahakarana Panchakshara (Sivaya),

Mahamanu or Mukti Panchakshara (Si)".

Now to the main confusion that seems to nag us, what of the "OM"?

Adding the 'OM' makes it the Shadakshari undoubtedly. And it is not a

corruption that crept in due to the effects of Kali Yuga! In fact

just like the Panchakshari stotram encodes each of the five letters

at the beginning of a verse so beautifully, there is the "SHADAKSHARI

stotram too that does a similar job of the six-lettered mantra.

Yet it is not uncommon for the six-lettered mantra to be referred to

as panchakshari while at the same time, writing that the mantra has

six letters! Consider this. the Panchakshara is said to be of six

kinds. But some of them especially the Mahakarana panchakshara (Si Va

Ya) and Mukti Panchakshara (Si) have three and only One letter

respectively. The reason why they are still referred to as the

Panchakshara, is because they still have the same basis, though the

emphasis is different. But technically and correctly speaking the six-

lettered mantra is Shadakshari, and a variation of the original

Panchakshari. But definitely it is not a corruption.

The greatest (and probably the most beautiful as well as enigmatic)

Tantric text of the Tamil Saiva tradition, is the

Tirumular's "Tirumantiram". Even the thought of the text and the sage

can bring great joy to someone who has ever studied it sincerely. It

is spritual poetry on one hand. On the other it expounds the

practical and theoretical aspects of Saiva religion and philosophy.

And at the same time it teaches the greatest secrets of Tantra to the

initiate in its charecteristic enigmatic style. I cannot think of any

other text that could compare to the Tirumantiram in the way it has

dealt with the Panchakshari from a practical (tantric) point of view,

covering all the variations and yantras. At the same time, it does

not let the actual goal of Moksa out of sight. All I can say is -

"inspiring spiritual poetry with great tantric depths".

The Tirumantiram gives all the variations and a lot more. It deals

with the six-lettered variation as well as the five-lettered. And it

also drives home the significance of each letter.

I can only say what the wise people have instructed me. The

panchakshari is undoubtedly a great mantra in all its

variations. "Just as fire has the natural property of burning

inflammable things, so also the Name of Lord Siva has the power of

burning the sins, Samskaras and Vasanas and bestowing eternal bliss

and everlasting peace on those who repeat the Name of the Lord. Just

as burning quality is natural and inherent in fire, so also the power

of destroying sins with their very root and branch and bringing the

aspirant into blissful union with the Lord through Bhava Samadhi, is

natural and inherent in the Name of God".

While any of the variations can confer merit, freedom from negative

karma and take an aspirant forward on the spiritual path, the

shadakshari and Mukti Panchakshari (Si) are said to be expressly for

emphasizing Moksha. I do not want to go deeper than this and would

like to leave it there. For the benefit of those who are interested,

I have appended some select verses from the fourth tantra of

Tirumantiram, as they could be of some interest to a few here. The

translation is by Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami and the entire text

can be accessed at

http://www.himalayanacademy.com/books/tirumantiram/TableOfContents.htm

l

But before that I will give you a taste of the sage's revelations.

Sage Tirumular says:

God alone is the Guru or the spiritual teacher. He shows Siva or Sat.

Sat-Guru is Ambalam or Chidakasa Siva. You will have to search the

Guru in your own heart. Knowledge, devotion, purity and Siddhis are

obtained through the grace of the Guru. The grace descends in

virtuous aspirants who have purity, dispassion, etc. (the text later

describes the human guru as an instrument and distinguishes between

God as Guru and the agent of instruction -Guru param)

"Abandon pride of learning. Introspect. Look within. You will be

firmly established in Siva. Nothing will shake you. You will be freed

from the trammels of births and deaths."

Saiva Siddhanta teaches Advaita only. It is Siva Advaita.

Now read some verses from the text.

================

951: Three Ways of Chanting Panchakshara

With "A" and "U" to commence,

And "Si" in center

(That is, as Om Na Ma Si Va Ya),

With "A" and "U" to commence,

And "Va" and rest aspirating in breath regulated,

(That is, as Om Va Si Ya Na Ma)

With "A" and "U" to commence,

And "Si" and rest in order following,

(That is, as Om Si Va Ya Na Ma)

As you thus chant,

The Primal Lord of "Om" appears,

Rejoicing.

953: Chant Aum, Nandi Appears

When with "A", chant "U" simultaneous,

Then does melting Mukti there appear;

When "Ma" I chanted,

With me was "Nandi";

How shall I speak of my Father's greatness!

954: Heavenly Letter Ends Birth

The knowledge of Jiva here below

Is unto letters written on water;

There is a Letter in heaven

They seek it not;

Who knows that Letter?

They who know it,

Have birth ended.

955: Mukti is When Aum Appears in Garland of Letters Within

Course breath through central Sushumna,

And be in the center within of the Garland of Letters;

When in the Center of that garland

The Primal Mantra AUM, Vedas speak of appears,

Then is Mukti, sure indeed.

961: Aum is Oblation to Siva

If Bindu and Nada conjoint reach

The Mystic Moon inside the head,

The heavenly ambrosia wells up,

The Mantra that rises there (AUM)

Is verily the oblation to Siva.

962: Chant Aum and Be Redeemed

They who chant the Six-Letter Mantra (Om Si Va Ya Na Ma)

Are they who truly know;

Dear Sarajit ji,

Now I have a doubt. What is difference in chanting with OM and without OM ? What

results one can expect ?Also if I say we can chant this Panchakshari Mantra as

OM NAMAHASHIVAYA OM,which is called as Samputikarana, then what are the results

?

With best regards,

Ramadas Rao.

Sarajit Poddar <sarajit (AT) (DOT) org> wrote:

Dear Chandrashekhar and Ramadas,

I think adding the Ekakshara OM and still keeping the Mantra Om Namah Sivaya as

Panchakshari is extending the principles. All the beejakhsaras in the mantras

are to be counted. OM is Tara beeja and has to be counted in Om Namah Sivaya,

making it a shadakshari, instead of Panchakshari. The real panchakshari is

Namah Sivaya, without OM.

If we stop counting OM in the mantra, and we follow the same principle with the

other ekaksharas or beejaksharas like, hrIM, shrIM or klIM, then the counting

of all the mantras will be changed. I think this is not proper.

The Panchakshari mantra is extracted out from the Panchakshari stotra. I am

pasting here the shiva panchakshara stotra as given by Sankaracharya, from

Sanskrit site http://sanskrit.gde.to/. The process of extracting the mantra

from the stotra is there in Mantra Mahodadih. One can refer that for further

knowledge.

For viewing the Sanskrit text, you need to install the Sanskrit 99 font, which I

am attaching herewith.

OM KLEEM KRISHNAYA NAMAHA

Dear Chandrashekar ji,

As you said the Panchakshara Mantra is NAMAHASHIVAYA.Om is added as a

pranavakshara giving life to this powerful Mantra. There are too many meanings

for OM.

With best regards,

Ramadas Rao.

Respected Narasimhaji/Ramdass Rao and other knowledgeable teachers,

I have been watching this topic for some time.If I may intervene, as I

understand "Om Namah Shivaay" has always been called as panchakshari mantra.

Now if the line of reasoning in the ongoing discussion is to be accepted it

would be counted as different number of words according to who is trying to

decipher it.Were the ancient sages wrong in calling the above mantra as

Panchakshari? Please enlighten me.

OM KLEEM KRISHNAYA NAMAHA

Dear Narasimha rao ji,

Now I also have got a doubt. For example the Mantra OM KLEEM KRISHNYA GOVINDAAYA

GOPIJANA VALLABHAAYA SWAHA.has a total of 7 words and a total of 19

syllables. So now how you will do this ?Will you divide the 19 by 12 and the

remainder is again 7,that means the mantra Devatha sits in Lagna only. or is it

sits on 10th house ?

Please clarify my doubts.

With best regards,

Ramadas Rao.

The resultant arudha house is the devata sthana - where the deity sits. For

Dear Sri Satya Prakash Choudhary ji,

It is really a superb article on PANCHAKSHARI MANTRA and this article has to be

saved by everybody.Too much thanks to you for giving such a beautiful and

complete meaning of PANCHAKSHARI MANTRA.

With best regards,

Ramadas Rao.

<satyaprakasika (AT) (DOT) co.uk> wrote:

AUM NAMAH SHIVAYADear group,When it comes to mantras, Sadhana is more about

silent practice, and less of discussion. Theoretical knowledge of mantras is of

no use at all if one does not practice the sadhana of the mantra. And yes, most

mantras require being initiated into the practice by an adept. And if one is

initiated by an adept, he would have recieved the RIGHT KNOWLEDGE AND

INSTRUCTIONS that go with it. So generally speaking, since I don't see any

point in a theoretical discussion of mantras, I try to stay away. In this case

I guess I could share a little because of a couple of reasons. > The real

panchakshari is Namah Sivaya, without OM. > > If we stop counting OM in the

mantra, and we follow the same principle> with the other ekaksharas or

beejaksharas like, hrIM, shrIM or klIM,> then the counting of all the mantras

will be changed. I think this is> not proper.> > The Panchakshari mantra is

extracted out from the Panchakshari stotra. While it is true that the

panchakshari is ENCODED (I wonder if the word "extracted" is appropriate

really) within the panchakshari stotram, TRADITIONALLY THE PANCHAKSHARI IS

TRACED TO THE FAMOUS RUDRA ADHYAYA OR THE SATARUDRIYA OF THE YAJUR VEDA.The

Satarudriya is one of the most powerful prayers. "Ananta Vai Vedah"-Infinite is

the meaning of the Vedas. There are multiple facets to the Satarudriya. "Rudra

Syedam Rudriyam" Beingrelated to Rudra these are known as Rudriyam. Rudra is

self-efflugent and he is none other than Shiva Mahadeva. Rudradhyayam is the

essence of Yajurveda. Yajurveda is the head of Paramesvara, who is the Veda

Purusha. There are seven Skandhas in Yajurveda. There is Rudradhyayi in the

centre of the middle Skandha. In this Rudradhyayi there are one thousand Rudra

Mantras. And it is said that Namassivaya or the Siva Panchakshara Mantra shines

in the centre of these one thousand Rudra Mantras. Rudram being in the middle,

is considered the face of Rudra or Paramesvara. As the Yama Smriti affirms,

Rudram is considered as the essence of the Vedas and can absolve one of all sin

the moment it is chanted. The merits acquired by chanting this are immense. And

what's more the Rudram is very sonorous and musical. It is a great experience

to listen to a group of traditional vedic priests chanting it in a chorus. In

this regard, no vedic chant can probably surpass it. But it is difficult to

chant the Satarudriya, because it requires training, as all veda mantras do. It

takes years to learn a little of the vedic chants from a practical point of

view. So what do the majority do? Are they to be deprived of the great benefits

of the Satarudriya? No. As already stated, Namassivaya or the Siva Panchakshara

Mantra shines in the centre of these one thousand Rudra Mantras. Yajurveda is

the head of Paramesvara, who is the Veda Purusha. Rudram which is in the middle

is the face, Panchakshara is His eye, 'Siva' which is in the centre of the

`Namassivaya' is the apple of the eye. Hewho does Japa of this Panchakshara is

freed from births and deaths and attains eternal bliss. This is the traditional

view of the panchakshari. Now let me proceed to the mantra as such. Panchakshari

is a Mahamantra which is composed of five letters, Namassivaya. It is said to be

the best among seven crores of Mantras. I will take a diversion here. Some one

seemed to be worried about chanting the mantra wrongly. Someone is of the

opinion that it is bhakti that matters largely. Yet another may tell you that

the science of mantras is an exact one and you should not play with. All are

right. For convenience sake one may classify mantras into various categories.

Without going too deep, let me tell you the bare minimum. The tantric mantras

with prayoga are very much like an exact science (I may post an introductory

article explaining the rationale etc later if I feel like- I remember M Deasai

asking for a clarification in another context). It is advisable not to play

around with them unless one has been initiated by an adept and has been

instructed fully. But there are mantras that are based on nama (names) of the

Lord. The Name of Lord Siva chanted in any way, correctly or incorrectly,

knowingly or unknowingly, carefully or carelessly, is sure to give the desired

result. Such sattvic mantras based on the Lord's names can work very well just

based on one's devotion and GRACE. As Swami Sivananda explained, "`Namah'

means`Prostration'. `Sivaya Namah' means `Prostration unto Lord Siva'. The Jiva

isthe servant of Lord Siva from the Deha-Drishti. `Namah' represents

Jivatman.`Siva' represents Paramatman. `Aya' denotes`Aikyam' oridentity of

Jivatman and Paramatman. Hence `Sivaya Namah' isa Mahavakya, like`Tat Tvam Asi'

which signifies the identitybetween the individual and the supreme soul". The

panchakshari is a safe mantra in that sense. Now let me tell you of the

variations of this mantra as I have learnt. Again I will quote Swami Sivananda.

"Panchakshara is of six kinds, viz., Sthula Panchakshara (Namassivaya), Sukshma

Panchakshara (Sivaya Namah), Karana Panchakshara (Sivaya Siva), Mahakarana

Panchakshara (Sivaya), Mahamanu or Mukti Panchakshara (Si)". Now to the main

confusion that seems to nag us, what of the "OM"? Adding the 'OM' makes it the

Shadakshari undoubtedly. And it is not a corruption that crept in due to the

effects of Kali Yuga! In fact just like the Panchakshari stotram encodes each

of the five letters at the beginning of a verse so beautifully, there is the

"SHADAKSHARI stotram too that does a similar job of the six-lettered mantra.Yet

it is not uncommon for the six-lettered mantra to be referred to as panchakshari

while at the same time, writing that the mantra has six letters! Consider this.

the Panchakshara is said to be of six kinds. But some of them especially the

Mahakarana panchakshara (Si Va Ya) and Mukti Panchakshara (Si) have three and

only One letter respectively. The reason why they are still referred to as the

Panchakshara, is because they still have the same basis, though the emphasis is

different. But technically and correctly speaking the six-lettered mantra is

Shadakshari, and a variation of the original Panchakshari. But definitely it is

not a corruption. The greatest (and probably the most beautiful as well as

enigmatic)Tantric text of the Tamil Saiva tradition, is the Tirumular's

"Tirumantiram". Even the thought of the text and the sage can bring great joy

to someone who has ever studied it sincerely. It is spritual poetry on one

hand. On the other it expounds the practical and theoretical aspects of Saiva

religion and philosophy. And at the same time it teaches the greatest secrets

of Tantra to the initiate in its charecteristic enigmatic style. I cannot think

of any other text that could compare to the Tirumantiram in the way it has dealt

with the Panchakshari from a practical (tantric) point of view, covering all the

variations and yantras. At the same time, it does not let the actual goal of

Moksa out of sight. All I can say is -"inspiring spiritual poetry with great

tantric depths".The Tirumantiram gives all the variations and a lot more. It

deals with the six-lettered variation as well as the five-lettered. And it also

drives home the significance of each letter. I can only say what the wise people

have instructed me. The panchakshari is undoubtedly a great mantra in all its

variations. "Just as fire has the natural property of burning inflammable

things, so also the Name of Lord Siva has the power of burning the sins,

Samskaras and Vasanas and bestowing eternal bliss and everlasting peace on

those who repeat the Name of the Lord. Just as burning quality is natural and

inherent in fire, so also the power of destroying sins with their very root and

branch and bringing the aspirant into blissful union with the Lord through Bhava

Samadhi, is natural and inherent in the Name of God". While any of the

variations can confer merit, freedom from negative karma and take an aspirant

forward on the spiritual path, the shadakshari and Mukti Panchakshari (Si) are

said to be expressly for emphasizing Moksha. I do not want to go deeper than

this and would like to leave it there. For the benefit of those who are

interested, I have appended some select verses from the fourth tantra of

Tirumantiram, as they could be of some interest to a few here. The translation

is by Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami and the entire text can be accessed at

http://www.himalayanacademy.com/books/tirumantiram/TableOfContents.html But

before that I will give you a taste of the sage's revelations. Sage Tirumular

says: God alone is the Guru or the spiritual teacher. He shows Siva or Sat.

Sat-Guru is Ambalam or Chidakasa Siva. You will have to search the Guru in your

own heart. Knowledge, devotion, purity and Siddhis are obtained through the

grace of the Guru. The grace descends in virtuous aspirants who have purity,

dispassion, etc. (the text later describes the human guru as an instrument and

distinguishes between God as Guru and the agent of instruction -Guru param)

"Abandon pride of learning. Introspect. Look within. You will be firmly

established in Siva. Nothing will shake you. You will be freed from the

trammels of births and deaths." Saiva Siddhanta teaches Advaita only. It is

Siva Advaita. Now read some verses from the text.================951: Three

Namaste Satyaji,

That was a wonderful article! Thank you taking time to post it.

> Now to the main confusion that seems to nag us, what of the "OM"?

> Adding the 'OM' makes it the Shadakshari undoubtedly. And it is

not a

> corruption that crept in due to the effects of Kali Yuga! In fact

Since I keep using this Kali Yuga phrase, it naturally felt like you

were referring to me. :-) Just for the record, I want to clarify

that I never said the above.

The Kali Yuga corruption mentioned by me is pronouncing "Sivaaya"

as "Sivaay" (Arabic influence). Whether there is om or whether there

is no om, it is a beautiful mantra either way. It's only a matter of

whether it is 5-syllabled or 6-syllabled. Either way, it is valid.

May Jupiter's light shine on us,

Narasimha
