Mantras: Aside from Technicalities...

Namaste friends,

I received a mail from a reader who was reading a mantra for many years with

"namoh" instead of "namah" or "namo". Technically, the mantra means nothing

with this error. He was wondering if he should stop it.

This touched me. So I want to say something fundamental, aside from

technicalities.

Mantras of saattwik devatas or mantras with a saattwik purpose NEVER HURT

YOU. If the mantra that should give fruits in the 9th house ends up giving

fruits in the 8th house bacause of a mispronunciation, it is not a bad

thing. Perhaps you can correct yourself, but don't worry too much apout it.

Whether a mantra gives fruits in the 6th house or 7th house or 8th house or

9th house, it will not give any undesirable results, as long it is saattwik.

If you are doing a tantrik mantra for a krura devata for a rajasik or

tamasik purpose, you'll have to be perfect in your rituals and

pronunciation. But, Vishnu, Shiva, Jupiter, Krishna etc will give you only

good results if you pray to them for a saattwik purpose. They'll never hurt

you. Irrespective of the source house from where energies are being drawn

and the house where fruits are being given and where the devata sits, the

results will only be auspicious. So never worry about it.

For that matter, even mistakes that render a mantra meaningless do not

matter much. After all, to protect the mind and activate various energy

centers in the body, any combination of sounds uttered continuously will

suffice as long as the image formed by them in the mind is saattwik. Whether

it has meaning in a language or not matters less. If it has a meaning in

your mind and if the meaning is saattwik, that is more than enough.

For example, if you just repeat "May Jupiter's light shine on us" 108 times

everyday thinking of the splenderous Jupiter - god of wisdom and sattwa - in

your mind, it will give you excellent results. This mantra (!) has 6 words,

8 letters and devata in 10th. Once I started using it at the end of my

posts, it made a big difference to me. My 6th house (source) has my AK Moon.

The 8th house has 4 planets in my chart and governs occult knowledge.

Jupiter is stationed in the 10th house of activities and gives fruits

related to occult.

Any saattwik thought can be used as a mantra to protect the mind. It's good

to know the technicalities and try to perfect what one's doing, but don't

worry too much about technicalities! As long as the thought in your mind

when reciting a mantra is not saattwik, even a perfectly uttered mantra will

do nothing for you. Number of letters and words (as determined from how it

is pronounced) and devata sthana is only one factor. The image and thoughta

in mind are a more important factor.

I hope this puts all the technical discussions in the right perspective!

May Jupiter's light shine on us,

Narasimha

Very well said. I still have a question though. I understand the

notion of correct pronounciation or number of letters and words as

the vibrations get altered by these and they affect different energy

centres differently. However, what is the logic behind repeating a

mantra specific number of times? What difference does it make if I

chant a mantra 108 times or 105 times? Shouldnt we be more worried

about the concentration and devotion while reciting the mantra rather

than counting beeds with it? I find trying to keep count affecting my

concentration and I chant mantras as long as I can stay in a state of

high concentration, totally ignoring the count. Is it a right

approach? Please advise.

Thanks,

Siva.

Dear Siva,

People use beads etc for counting, so that it can be done without

much involvement of the conscious mind. If counting still interfers

with your concentration, I advise you to do the mantra without

counting. Yes, 11 times, 40 times and 108 times etc are for guidance

only.

After all, there are two aspect of a mantra - sound and thought. The

vibrations of sound are important, but the vibrations of the thought

are also as important. Both work in harmony for the best mantras.

This aspect is often ignored, but as important if not more important

than sound.

If rajasik and tamasik thoughts fill your mind when you read a

saattwik mantra, it will not do anything for you. Understand the

meaning of the mantra and keep your mind focussed on the meaning or

the image of the deity or something nice like that.

May Jupiter's light shine on us,

Narasimha
