Dear Chintan,

I am a beginner in astrology and trying to learn astrology - so apologies in

advance for any errors that might creep up. Hopefully, any members / Gurus who

spot errors can correct me.

Using Nakshatra / Pada information:

Navamsha stands for the 9th subdivision of the Rasi chakra (i.e each sign of

30 degree is subdivided into 9 sub-divisions of 3 degrees and 20 minutes). The

link between Navamsha and Nakshatras is quite simple given that 9 subdivisions

x 12 signs = 108 sub-divisions = 4 (Number of padas) x 27 (Number of

nakshatras).

You need the Nakshatra and pada (quarter of the nakshatra) that any planet

falls into to draw up the Navamsha chakra.

Count the number of padas the planet has traversed from 0 Aries. To do that

you need to count the number of nakshatras from Aswini to the planet in

consideration. Multiply that by 4. Add the number of padas traversed in the

current constellation by the planet. For example say, Mars is in Aslesha, 3rd

pada. Then the calculation would be 8 planets (Aslesha is 9th) x 4 + 3 = 35

padas. The planet is in the 35th pada.

Divide the number by 9. The quotient gives the number of signs the planet has

passed and the remainder the Navamsha the planet has passed. Zero means that

planet is in Aries Rashi. Count Navamsha many signs from the source (see rule

below) to see where the planet is placed in the Navamsha. Remember if remainder

is 1 then the planet is in the same Navamsha as the source. 0 means that it is

in 9th from source.

Source: For any planet falling in the Fiery signs (Aries, Leo, Saggitarius) -

Count from Aries. For planets in Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) - count

from Capricorn. For planets in Airy signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) count from

Libra, For planets in Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) count from Cancer.

In the example, Mars has passed 3 signs from Aries and 8 Navamshas. The planet

in the Rasi therefore is in the 4th sign = Cancer. Cancer = Water sign = Start

count at Cancer. 8th Sign from cancer = Aquarius. Hence Mars is in Cancer Rasi

and Aquarius navamsha.

Using Degrees and Minutes information:

Take the degree (0-360) position of the planet. Divide by 30 to get the Rasi

position. (0-30 Aries...330-360 Pisces). Take that degrees traversed by the

planet in a Rasi and divide by 3.33 (3 Degrees and 20 Minutes). The (remainder

+ 1) defines the number of Navamshas the planet has traversed from the source

(Source identification as above). 1=Same as source, 9th is 9th from source.

Hope that helps,

Subramaniam
