Dear Frank,

SanjayP has already replied to you. When it comes to the question of

how we can be sure that the weekdays that we are currently using are

right, I have nothing to add.

But I will make one point on the importance of weekday. You give the

impression that the use of the weekday in Tithi Pravesha system made

you sit up and realize the importance of weekdays.

The fact is that weekday is a basic thing in astrology and has an

importance of its own. It is one of the five angas (limbs) of

panchanga (pancha = five, anga = limbs).

The five limbs of panchanga are vara (weekday), karana (lunar half-

day), nakshatra (constellation), tithi (lunar day) and yoga (soli-

lunar day). These five limbs show the nature of time with respect to

the five elements (pancha bhootas or pancha tattvas). These five

represent the five elements - fire, earth, air, water and ether.

Vaara represents the fire element. Fire element is important for

determining longevity and physical strength. Whether you are looking

at a muhurta (electional) chart or a prasna (horary) chart, pay close

attention to the weekday lord. Is he a functional benefic or a

malefic? Is he placed in a quadrant or a trine from lagna, lagna lord

and karyesha (the lord of the house of interest) or in a dusthana?

For example, look at the chart when I joined PictureTel (my 4th job)

in March 1996. The chart is cast for 4th March 1996, 11:40 am,

Andover, MA, USA. It was a Monday. Gemini rises. Moon is in Le - a

quadrant from lagna lord Mercury in Aq and a trine from 10th lord

Jupiter in Sg. He is functionally neutral from Ge. Overall, he is

quite favorable and I stayed in that job for more than 5 years (which

is quite long for my desa-kala-patra).

Now, let us look at the chart when I left PictureTel and joined

ThinkEngine - a telecom start-up - in May 2001. The chart is cast for

10th May 2001, 12:50 pm, Marlboro, MA, USA. It was a Thursday lorded

by Jupiter. Leo was rising. Jupiter in Taurus is in dwir-dwadasa from

exalted lagna lord Sun and in 3rd from exalted 10th lord Venus.

Though lagna lord and 10th lord are both exalted, poor placement of

weekday lord from them does not promise long life of this job. After

I worked at the company for 1 year 3 months, they basically closed

the whole engineering group and went into survival mode with the

marketing people still there. So the job did not last too long and I

had to look for another job.

Longevity is one thing, but how was the job while it lasted?

Fire element ruled by Mars only shows physical strength and

longevity. To see the overall success, use the earth element ruled by

Mercury! That element is represented by the karana lord.

Now, go back to the PictureTel joining chart. Vishti karana was

running at the time. Saturn rules it. He is the 8th and 9th lord from

Ge lagna and functionally neutral. Though he is in the 2nd house from

lagna lord, he is in a quadrant from the 10th lord and from lagna

too. Overall, he is fine and the job was good. In the ThinkEngine

joining chart, bava karana rises. Sun rules bava karana. He is the

exalted lagna lord in the 9th from lagna. Despite being in the 2nd

from 10th lord, he is an excellently placed planet overall. This

shows excellent success. While I was in the job, I worked very well

and was one of the most productive engineers at the start-up. That's

what a good karana shows. All the big people at the company liked me

very much and I got along well with all. That, however, has nothing

to do with karana or vaara. That is seen from aakasa atttva (ether).

Look at aakasa tattva (binding). Yoga shows it. In the PictureTel

chart, Sukarman yoga ruled by Mars was running. Mars is a functional

malefic for Ge lagna. He is in 3rd from 10th lord, but joins lagna

lord. Overall, he is mixed and shows mixed results in networking with

people, interacting with people, getting along well and impressing

people. It is mixed. Now, in the ThinkEngine chart, Siddha yoga ruled

by Ketu runs. Ketu is in a quadrant from lagna, trine from lagna lord

and quadrant from 10th lord. Exalted Ketu is excellently placed in

the chart and the element of yoga is quite strong. This shows

excellent binding principle. That is why I got along fine with all

and impressed. However, despite all the strengths, weakness of

weekday lord made it short-lived.

In this manner, weekday lord and lords of the other four panchanga

principles are used in prasna charts and muhurta charts by

intelligent astrologers. Of course, they have use in other charts

too, but they are particularly important in muhurta and prasna charts.

May Jupiter's light shine on us,

PVR (aka Narasimha)
