Hi!

I'm new to Vedic astrology and just saw my chart and a couple

computer generated interpretations.

Vedic astrology seems to leave very little room for interpretation

and free will. After looking at my chart i became horribly depressed

and upset. I'm very familiar with Western astrology which always

gives a positive spin on things, whereas Vedic astrology doesn't.

I also wonder if exact birthtime is important in Vedic astrology.

I was born june 09, 1983 at 4:00pm in Saigon, Vietnam ,

but i'm sure they round off to the nearest quarter hour.

i could've been born probably anywhere between 3:45-4:15 pm.

In western astrology, that means i'm either scorpio or saggitarius

rising. I know i'm scorpio rising because i fit the description

perfectly. I wanted to know if that difference in 15 minutes would

affect my vedic chart in any way?

In western astrology I'm:

Ascendent-Scorpio

Sun-Gemini

Moon-Taurus

Mercury-Taurus

Venus-Leo

Mars-Gemini

Jupiter-Saggitarius

Saturn-Libra

North node- Gemini

South node- Saggitarius

In Vedic astrology I'm:

Ascendant- Libra

Sun -Taurus

Moon -Taurus

Mars -Taurus

Mercury -Taurus

Jupiter -Scorpio

Venus -Cancer

Saturn -Libra

Rahu -Gemini

Ketu -Sagittarius

Hi Tiffany,

I am also a beginner like you.

Yes, exact birth time is very important in Vedic astrology.

One point is: please do not trust computer generated interpretations.

Western astrology is not predictive whereas Vedic astrology is. Vedic

astrology only tells you where your past Karmas are taking you. Of

course, you have the ability to use fee wll to improve your Karmas.

Please ignore the negative computer interpretation, it is computer

generated and hence cannot be accurate. Vedic astrology requires a

lot of skill and interpretation that a machine cannot have.

Sagar.

Dear Sagar,

It's not the computers fault. The 'stupid' machine only follows

instructions.

The programmer and/or the text supplier are those responsible ...

Kind regards

I am sorry you think that Vedic Astrology is depressing.Vedic astrology is an

almost exact science but is not an Over The Counter type of science. There is

nothing depressing about vedic Astrology.

You became depressed as you went about getting your interpretation through

computer generated predictions. These are mostly based on merely reciting

effects of individual planets in individual houses. This is exactly not how

interpretations are to be arrived at in Vedic astrology.

Whereas in western astrology the reference point is the Sign occupied by Sun

which changes once in a month; in Vedic Astrology, the reference point is the

Sign rising at the horizon at the time of birth.this sign changes every 2 Hr.s

or so depending on your location and season.Obviously the predictions are not

as general as western astrology.Further smallest divisions of signs and planets

placement in them within a sign also carries certain interpretations.

Therefore if done on bassis of a fixed formula the interpretations go awry. This

why interpretations have to be carried out by a qualified and experienced

astrologer and the proper procedure to obtain is for the Querist to approach

him personally.

About your question about accuracy of birth time, from above it would become

clear the importance of timing as a difference of as much as 2 minutes(1/60of a

sign of 30 degrees) would lead to change in correct interpretation.

Now comes the question of how to get the correct time over the recording of

which the Querist has no control. This is where the astrologer has to bring his

experience and knowledge to bear on the appearance of the Querist, the past

events of his life , and any other information in order to arrive as near as

possible to correct Ascendant placement so that he can give right

interpretation.

Even while making a prediction it is enjoined upon the astrologer( By our

ancient sages) that he take in to consideration the Country, Time, race,

cultural practices etc. of the community to which the querist belongs and use

his "discretion and intelligence"(Known as Viveka in Sanskrit) when

giving prediction. The very essence of Vedic Astrology is to help people and not

to frighten them that is why it is called Jyotish (Divine enlightenment).

Unfortunately, in these days of gros commercialism many people use half baked

knowledge of this Divine science to scare people and make money.I offer my

apology on behalf of all the Ancient sages who never intended this science to

be used in this way.

About your chart , though the details are sketchy and I am only a seeker of true

knowledge,I shall try to give a rough reading. Please understand that as I have

not seen you the reading could be termed only most preliminary.

You may be slightly on leanside and probably dark for your family. You have one

of what is known as Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas and your current status should be

much above that at the time of your birth. You could have an interest or carrear

in Law or as a cunsultant. You might not have had what is known as Pitru

Sukha(either you might not have lived for long with your dad or might have had

difference of opinion with him and would not follow his profession).Exchange of

houses between Venus and Moon indicate your inclination towards artistic and

exotic things and furthering of your carrear through them.Oportunities in your

life must have come suddenly. You will have a tendency to spend lavishly and

may find some difficulty in preserving your wealth, though this is not much of

a problem. You would have a large gathering of friends but would not divulge

your innermost thoughts to them. You would care for the downtrodden.Though

apparently outgoing, you will be a very private person and should avoid a

tendency towards negative thinking.Last year you might have had some health

problem. You can be a very good advisor ad people much older than you must have

been seeking your advise even when you were very young.Saturn being planet of

maturity your getting settled in life, getting recognition marriage etc. would

be relatively late but it would be substantial and lasting.

Kindly let me know whether some of what I have assessed is near the truth.

Regards,

Chandrashekhar.

The spin given depends on who you go to. It depends on the attitude of the

astrologer.

Big time! A difference of 2 minutes is enough to make big changes. After

all, there are many twins born in this world who were born a few minutes

apart but differ from each other significantly.

In fact, there is a low level parameter that is very important in

characterizing the overall nature of the person, which changes once in every

24 seconds on average.

That is why good Vedic astrologers first rectify (fix) the birthtime based

on known events from your life and then proceed to give readings.

* * *

I just took a look at your chart. Like me, you too have 4 planets in the 8th

house - the so-called house of troubles and misfortune. Now I know why you

got depressing readings! I too got a lot of bad readings by people who go by

thumbrules, but luckily the reality has been different.

If you take your chart - or any chart with 4 planets in the 8th house - to

an astrologer or astrology program that goes by thumbrules, you will only

get depressing results. But, don't worry, thumbrules don't always work. The

real knowledge is far more subtle.

May Jupiter's light shine on us,

PVR (aka Narasimha)

Dear List Members

It is not correct to say that Western Astrology is not predictive. You can

predict future incideents also, if you really study Western Astrology. Only it

does not have esoteric explainations. The predictions may not be as accurate as

in Vedic Astrology.

Hello Tiffany, It is not that vedic astrology leaves little room for

free will and interpretation.Unfortunately in our country the

educated class have not taken much to astrology for the last many

many years.Having remained primarily in the hands of the uneducated,

the recent literature available on the subject is not up to the mark

and does not present the subject in the proper perspective. The

ancient literature though of outstanding content has become outdated

and proper translations too are not easily available, the language

Sanskrit being no longer in common use.As regards your statement that

western astrology always gives a positive view of things i may tell

you that western astrology gives an escapist view of things and not

reallistic or balanced view.If things were always positive then

negative would never have happened in life. But you would agree with

me that it happens and at least 50 percent of the times. And it is

always useful to know the negative in advance so that you can fight

it.Remember the old saying forewarned is forearmed.Remember also that

nothing is absolute including vedic astrology predictions. However i

may tell you that in my experience of about 20 years of the study of

both vedic and western astrology as a hobby i find vedic astrology

capable of giving much more accurate predictions. As regards time

difference of 15 minutes, yes that can make a difference in everyone's

vedic chart including yours. R.K.Baqaya -- In vedic-
