Guest guest
Vyam Vyasadevaaya Namah Dear Kautilya, This discussion now seems to center on the question as to whether we Jeevatmas are different from the Paramaatmam. In chapter 1 slokas 21-24 of Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra, Maharishi Parasara states that all beings have both Jeevatma-amsa and Paramatma-amsa in them. Either of them dominating. Now just to confirm check out Bhagavad Purana Canto 11 - Chapter 11. Heres an excerpt, offcourse the whole thing should be read: 5. Thus, My dear Uddhava, in the same material body we find opposing characteristics, such as great happiness and misery. That is because both the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is eternally liberated, as well as the conditioned soul are within the body. I shall now speak to you about their different characteristics. 6. By chance, two birds have made a nest together in the same tree. The two birds are friends and are of a similar nature. One of them, however, is eating the fruits of the tree, whereas the other, who does not eat the fruits, is in a superior position due to His potency. 7. The bird who does not eat the fruits of the tree is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who by His omniscience perfectly understands His own position and that of the conditioned living entity, represented by the eating bird. That living entity, on the other hand, does not understand himself or the Lord. He is covered by ignorance and is thus called eternally conditioned, whereas the Personality of Godhead, being full of perfect knowledge, is eternally liberated. This should put it clear that the Supreme Soul(Paramatman) and conditioned Soul(Jeevatman) exist in the same entity. Now i've gone through 2 generations(Parasara and his son Vyasa) of teaching, who seem to agree. I finish with this sloka given in an earlier chapter of the same Purana: One who has completely fixed his mind on Me should see Me within his own soul and should see the individual soul within Me, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Thus, he sees the individual souls united with the Supreme Soul, just as one sees the sun’s rays completely united with the sun. Best wishes, Visti. p.s. Sorry for lack of sanskrit slokas, yet it would seem hard to misinterpretate the above.
Guest guest
Dear Visti, I dont know to which country you belong and what is your background. One of the fundamental things about Vedas, Upanishads and puranas is that it has to be read and understood through a proper guru.Learning sanskrit is a fundamental requirement for studying the Vedas/Upanishads/Puranas. In the last two milleniums, there were three great acaryas who interpreted the vedas/upanishads.Ofcourse all the three were different to varying degrees. If Advaita(Shankara) and Dvaita(Madhva) stood opposing to each other, you had Vishitadvaita(Ramanuja) somewhere in between, more or less closer to Dvaita. Madhva, the Vayu incarnate, was the one who showed polemical spirit while disagreeing with Advaita. The whole life of Madhva was devoted to disprove Advaita, line by line, word by word.I would urge you to go through the website http://www.dvaita.org, to understand what i am talking about. The beauty of sanskrit is that there will be different layers of meaning for a single word which is why you will find many people interpreting the same words and sentence with different names. To top it all, we will find people fighting over verses by having their English translations.... Why should you believe in what Madhva says ?There is absolutely no reason to believe any one school of thought without understanding each of them and comparing them.I would urge you to make a comparative study of these schools of vedanta and arrive at a conclusion which is logically correct.I am sure you wont be able to do that in your present birth, unless you come and study in India... If you happen to go through certain books on Madhva philosophy, you will come across various legends where saints belonging to the order of Dviata philosophy having won debates over Advaita and Vishitadvaita...
